As bipedals, ankle injuries will not only put a damper on your riding, it'll also mess up day-to-day activities. The Sombrio Slats Hi-Top Shoe helps prevent said injury with a removable ankle strap. And, that's just the start of this shoe's featured packed, flat-pedal optimized gravity offerings.

Sombrio established themselves by producing innovative and functional riding clothing, and now it's taking the MTB shoe market. Using the same formula, extensive R&D guided with input from professional riders that rocketed them to the forefront of mountain bike apparel, Sombrio is proud to have developed new rubber compound.

This compound has a proprietary molecular structure developed specifically for use with flat pedals. It is a high-friction compound with FS Performance technology to not only offer incredible grip to pedals and terra firma, its durometer helps malleability to provide a tangible interface. You'll know exactly where your foot lands for unmatched sense of pedal position. The soles' shape and sidewall is also slightly rockered for an enhanced connection to the pedal-to-shoe interface.

With that much attention given to the compound and sole shape, one might think the logo'd lugs are just an embellished afterthought. However, Sombrio found that the lugs, when cast positively, hooked traction pins. The added connection to the pedals reduces the chance for a slipped foot. Sombrio didn't stop there either. The outsoles are void of catch points — it's the same pattern throughout. This provides a consistent feel for excellent foot position and dexterity to the pedals. Heel and arch support is provided by molded perforated polyurethane insole, what Sombrio calls Dura4rm. The inserts are antimicrobial, breathable, and lightweight. Most importantly though, the shock-absorbing Dura4rm absorbs impacts to help avoid injury on bailouts, and it prevents heel lift when pedaling. Crashes are inevitable, and the Slats' leather uppers are tough enough to take a beating.

The Slats Hi-Top Shoe's available in Black or Navy and Orange.

Near perfect

Such killer grip, excellent comfort and fit, great price too! The high top version has great ankle protection and has proved to be very useful even though I had my doubts! Again, I love the grippy sole pattern that sombrio utilizes on their shoes.

Bang for the Buck Shoe

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

This is my first real mountain biking specific shoe, so my basis of comparison are the endless pairs of Adidas and Pumas I've destroyed.

I've been using the charcoal version of these shoes almost daily since October 2014, and I have to say I'm rather impressed with them. As previous reviews have stated, the charcoal version does not have the same mesh that the all black version does. It can get a bit warm, but having the ankle support is worth it.

The build quality, for the price, is unbeatable. With nearly daily use, there's no excessive wear that would worry any rider. The soles stay grippy and don't chunk away with various pedal pins (straight or sharp).

The only pedal pins, that aren't super grippy, are the fat straight pins.

I bought these shoes needing a solid kick to get me through 10 hour workdays of continuous running back and forth and jumping and climbing latters and skipping... especially skipping... little did I know that this shoe is amazing for everything! I ride my bike, hike, and work in these things and my feet are so much happier now that I made the buy. If you are on the fence about this buy or unsure about the aesthetics... DON'T BE! BUT THEM NOW!!!!

Awesome kicks!

The last pair of 5.10's I have been riding in were looking quite sad. The leather was stained from mud and they had a hole in the side from a wreck I took. Needless to say it was time to get some new kicks.

These puppies just happened to be on sale at 75% off! I then started to wonder if the shoes were cheaply made and if they would fall apart if used for biking, as they were originally intended. Still at 75% off I decided to give them a try. Oh how glad I am I did.

These shoes are sick! They are far more comfortable than I imagined they would be. The rubber is sticky and holds very well to a platform pedal. The mid-sole is stiff enough to provide support for short to medium distance rides (6-20 miles), but not so stiff that you cannot walk around in them when you are done riding.

After a few rides the shoes seem to be holding up very well. I even took a rock to one of the shoes mid-pedal and it hardly left a mark. I was going quite fast when I hit the rock, and I imagine not all shoes would have held up to such an impact.

These shoes would be a good purchase at their intended retail price. However at the discount we have them for they are truly a steal. Just buy them and thank me later.

I wear a 9-10 in most shoes, and 9.5 seems to fit me best in most brands. The 9.5 in these is spot on.

Do these shoes run true to size, small or large?

Yes. I wear a 12 typically and they fit true to a 12, though more like a snowboard boot than a typical shoe.

Nice Winter Shoe

The Shoe is vinyl so it can be a bit hot. but it is very water proof. I found the seam across the toes gave me a blister at first, but it broke in after some good hiking days. Very Stylish, and durable. I have the all vinyl charcoal or carbon ones and they don't breath very well, if I drive up skiing, I change my socks before my ski boots or they will be moist (but i usually do that anyway)
