Smartwool, great but expensive

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I love smartwool, I've found their products fit me well and are extremely durable.

I purchased these socks with my Backcountry.com credits, so they were free. I had never used compression socks, as I hadn't really understood the hype around it all. I figured I'd give them a try.

Honestly I can't tell much of a difference in performance, aside from the fact that having a little compression seems to have helped me recover from a slight ankle injury. The feel however is nice, really comfortable. Very durable, haven't noticed any wear and I've done about 200 miles in them. Not sure if it adds on any miles but I'd rather not rely on gear for that anyways.

I use these primarily on colder runs, or I'll keep them in my pack on longer runs when I need to change after I've completed any creek crossings for the day.

A nice addition to my smart wool sock collection, however as with most smart wool products I will never pay full price for them, hence the three stars.

Don't just buy these, marry them.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These arrived tonight and I tried them on immediately. The only problem is now I don't ever want to take them off. I thought I was doing fine with my calf and ankle issues by wearing sensible shoes and light exercise and calf stretches, but now that I'm wearing these I realize just how uncomfortable my calves, ankles, and arches have been. Everything just feels better simply from wearing these the past few hours. I really wish I'd known about these when I first took up running or during the first of many attempts to recover from tendinitis. These seem like they may actually help me fully recover. I'm only giving four stars though, not five, because I haven't tried them long enough to attest to how well they work over the long-run. But in the short run, they feel awesome.

They performed great!

I purchased these while training for the Superior Trail 25k in Northern Minnesota. I have never tried compression anything before but bought these to relieve pain from medial shin splints I incurred while training (it's tough to get enough winter/spring running volume in MN). They allowed me to run completely pain free and I finished the race with no shin splint pain whatsoever.

Holy socks!

I think Smartwool needs to go back to the drawing board a little on their socks, including this pair. After only ONE WEEK, there was a hole in both toes. This is common with their other socks too. I'm done with this brand.

Responded on

Been abusing Smartwool socks for a numbers of years. I have never had a problem with them and would recommend them to anyone.

Responded on

I've worn these socks for a year now, mostly at work: long days on the feet. These are the best socks I've worn, hands down. Easy to get on as well, which most compression socks are kinda hard to get on.
