Description

Silence. That's all Dr. Allen Lim heard when he knew he had arrived at a solution. No longer were his Garmin riders complaining of the headaches and bloated stomachs that had plagued them for so long. Lim had spent countless hours mixing formulas in buckets to create not a product, but a solution that was informally dubbed Secret Drink Mix, or SDM. Why a secret? Because word had spread through the peloton that Lim had perfected a hydration solution that was effective and delicious, and it led to many pros pouring out the electrolyte-heavy, overly sweetened beverages provided by their sponsors and replacing it with Lim's contraband. Fortunately for us, the secret is out, and Lim is offering this pro-developed and battle-tested solution to the world. It's now called the Exercise Hydration Mix, from Lim's Boulder, Colorado-based Skratch Labs.

Unlike many sports drinks, which are formulated around electrolyte or caloric replenishment during physical exertion, the Exercise Mix focuses on keeping your body's sodium levels carefully regulated. Lim discovered that the rampant headaches plaguing his pro riders were not induced by a lack of fluids, but rather, a lack of sodium -- a very typical symptom of dehydration. Essentially, your kidneys regulate fluid retention based on the body's concentration of sodium. When sodium concentration is high, your body is forced to hold on to that fluid to dilute it. But when your sodium levels get too low (ie: through sweat loss), the opposite happens and your kidneys must expel that fluid.

Lim's mix is designed to keep your body's sodium balance carefully regulated, maintaining hydration while also slowing diuresis. With diuresis slowed, you'll be able to pre-hydrate and drink more before a race without needing to make those three inopportune bathroom breaks right before your call-up. If these concepts around a sodium-based formula sound familiar, that's because they are -- Lim's drink mix contains nearly four times the amount of sodium in many convenience-store sports drinks, putting it on par with emergency-grade rehydration salt formulas like Pedialyte, and those used by the World Health Organization to combat severe dehydration.

The athletes that helped Lim develop the Exercise Mix weren't just complaining of headaches. They were also suffering from severe stomach bloating and flavor fatigue. The second half of Lim's solution was to ensure his drink was easy and pleasurable to consume day in and day out. To accomplish this, every ingredient from the Exercise Mix is naturally occurring or naturally sourced from real fruit, which ensures you're not putting anything in your body that's been chemically formulated or enhanced. In short, if it wasn't here on this earth before you were, Dr. Lim and his team refused to use it.

The ingredients are: sucrose, glucose, sodium citrate, potassium citrate, calcium citrate, magnesium citrate, freeze dried fruit, citric acid (a natural preservation agent from pure lime juice), and ascorbic acid. Notice the pronounced absence of the 'natural flavors' found in so many other sports drinks. Part of what makes the Exercise Mix so uniquely palatable even during prolonged periods of exercise and constant re-hydration is the lack of a savoring agent. Generally, chemically-derived flavoring agents like those ominous 'natural flavors' tend to remain on your palate, causing flavor fatigue, and in larger doses, wreak havoc on your gut.

The Exercise Mix uses real lemons, limes, oranges, and raspberries, which are freeze-dried and pounded into powder. This creates a refreshing, super-clean flavor that's easy on your stomach without a lingering aftertaste that wears out its welcome halfway into your race. It means you're not just getting a 'flavor' of lemon or orange, you're getting actual lemons and oranges in the mix. This is one of the many fundamental breakthroughs behind the Skratch Labs drink mixes. Whether you're staying hydrated during a 24-hour endurance race, or re-hydrating after a grueling criterium, they simply taste great.

Lim and his team created two drink mixes, optimizing each for different levels of physical exertion. This Exercise Hydration Mix has a slightly higher salt content, making it Skratch Labs' on-bike mix, best used for periods when your heart rate is up and you're sweating. Because this mix has a supremely high absorption rate and is not a natural diuretic, it's excellent as a preventative measure against dehydration while you ride, when you stop at an aid station, or immediately after your workout or race, because you can drink a larger volume of it at a time without painful bloating. This is due in part to the drink's exceptionally low levels of acidity, and lack of chemically-enhanced flavors.

The Skratch Labs Exercise Hydration Mix is available in Lemon Lime, Orange, or Raspberry. Each one-pound package should provide approximately twenty (23 grams dry), 500ml servings.

Apples & Cinnamon is amazing!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I thought this stuff was going to taste super artificial... as most of the drink mixes do. But no... this stuff tastes like apple and cinnamon infused water. Haven't tried it hot as it suggests, but I love it cold.

Hydrate/fuel without sugary stomach bomb

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have a pretty tough stomach (or at least I think I do), but when going on adventures for several hours, I often found myself feeling pretty sick of sugary drinks and gels. Skratch adds just enough subtle flavor to make the drink interesting while at the same time helping provide an optimal mix for hydration. For longer efforts you will definitely need another source of calories, as well (Skratch has not so many calories per serving).

I'm a big fan of Allen Lim's work and am also experimenting with recipes from his book for making "real food" to eat while on the bike (or other endurance adventure).

Awesome Stuff

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love this stuff. It is the only drink that I have found to stop the cramps that I use to get riding. I've tried all of major electrolyte drinks including Accelerade and Hammer electrolyte capsules. The science behind hydrating with Skratch is sound.

Light Tasting and Great

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Scratch Exercise mix is the best-tasting and lightest-tasting hydration mix on the market. Salt content is good for long rides. It's lower calorie so needs to be supplemented during longer exertion but it's top-notch. The packaging is annoying however---but I suppose it helps the landfills so I won't complain.

Tasty Energy

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my go to drink mix for hitting the road or the slopes. It contains all of the nutrients that I need for hydration and gives me the boost of energy to make it over the next climb or to the next pow stash. Even better is that it tastes great without having the strong, mouth drying after bits that competitors may have.

Smooth

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

No crappy residual after taste left in your mouth. Nice neutral flavor and dissolves rapidly. Perfect.

goes down so easy

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

super easy to digest, I have problems with heavy substances when im riding and the skratch fits the bill for easy going down. i use 3/4 scoop on regular rides, a full scoop and maybe a little more on really hot races. taste is super easy to handle as well.

Best I've found

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

In training for an ultra trail race and half ironman I've experimented with many different hydration options. The following are the reasons why I choose Skratch Labs:
- Better taste (which really means less of a taste)
- Less sugar
- Right amount of Sodium for my sweat rate

Always in the cupboard

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I always have some on hand, for biking, running, fishing, hangovers, or just general dehydrating feelings. Its some of the best stuff out there. I have tried most, rejected a few completely, and suffered through some big containers of junk, and will be on the Skratch train forever.

Better then...

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This drink mix is one of the best sports drinks out there. It's not overly sugary, and after you drink it you don't need to wash it down with water right after it, which makes it nice for long rides, runs, etc... Get it you won't regret buying this over some other sports drink mix.

great drink mix

I have no complaints. The taste is subtle and the effects are prominent. All in all i recommend this to all of my customers.

best drink mix around

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

if your doing any type of exercise, this is the best mix to have with you to get back all of your electrolytes, and get back to be hydrated. i purchased the raspberry flavor and its so good.

My Favorite..bar none!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have, and continue to use everything under the sun as far as nutritional products go; but Skratch has been my go-to electrolyte and lighter calorie exercise hydration drink mix since it was released.

The flavor is light enough to drink at any temperature, but has enough energy and electrolytes to sustain you for up to 2 hours on the bike without much else in the way of nutrition.

Easy to say, any time I am riding for 2 hours or under, my bike is always outfitted with 2 bottles of Skratch Exercise!

My favorite flavors are the Matcha/Lemon and Raspberry; I always have several bags of each on hand at all times.

so good

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

this mix has such a great taste to it, full of all the stuff you need to replace after a long ride / run.
the best part is it does not stain your water bottle like other mixes.

Skip the sugar and fuel your body!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This stuff is awesome- not really much else to be said. It tastes great and is WAY better for you than the sugary disaster they call Gatorade. Will definitely be keeping some of this in stock at my home at all times.

Much better than Gatorade

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I just started using this to replace my other sports drinks and am loving it! I love the taste, it's not as strong as I was expecting but I really like it. I never liked Gatorade, Powerade, or any of the other sports drinks because they had such a strong sugary taste and would always water down my sports powders because of it. This has a subtle taste that's not over powering and I can drink the full serving. I love that you're not consuming as much processed sugar and other chemicals in this product! I feel a lot more hydrated and my recovery after a long run is much better when I drink a full serving to refuel. Highly suggest this product. I ordered the pineapple and like the taste. I'm going to order the raspberry to have another option.

Tasty Treat for Recovery

I got this free with an order and love it. It is tasty and does the trick after exerting yourself.

Apples & Cinnamon

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is excellent tasting. Natural flavor and none of that weird fake chemical icky taste. Have had this both hot and cold and really like it both ways. I think it was very helpful for rehydration and recovery from a recent multi-day high altitude alpine ascent. Will continue to use.

I even mixed some into my oatmeal today at home just to see. Might not be the best application but i felt like I had a lot more energy after eating it. Plus the flavor was a great addition. :)

Absolutely the Best Drink Mix I've Tried

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I'm particular when it comes to the taste and performance of my drink. I'm 49 but do more than 5k miles per year cycling and have had some issues with Dehydration (e.g., ending up in the emergency room after a half century due to runners colitis, etc.). But, going along with that, I am needing to watch my calorie intake as I'm getting a bit older than some other people cycling this much that are significantly younger in age. I was using Iron Man Perform for years, but its 200+ calories per bottle. I tried Accelerade Hydro, which is half that but the taste is only okay. This tastes AWESOME. It's not too sweet and works both from a performance perspective and from a calorie counting perspective (only 100 calories for a 20oz bottle). Highly recommend this to anyone who's willing to give it a try. Get the mason jar also as the bags don't seal that well after opening and you need this to stay moisture free as it has real fruit in it.
