Silence. That's all Dr. Allen Lim heard when he knew he had arrived at a solution. No longer were his Garmin riders complaining of the headaches and bloated stomachs that had plagued them for so long. Lim had spent countless hours mixing formulas in buckets to create not a product, but a solution that was informally dubbed Secret Drink Mix, or SDM. Why a secret? Because word had spread through the peloton that Lim had perfected a hydration solution that was effective and delicious, and it led to many pros pouring out the electrolyte-heavy, overly sweetened beverages provided by their sponsors and replacing it with Lim's contraband. Fortunately for us, the secret is out, and Lim is offering this pro-developed and battle-tested solution to the world. It's now called the Exercise Hydration Mix, from Lim's Boulder, Colorado-based Skratch Labs.

Unlike many sports drinks, which are formulated around electrolyte or caloric replenishment during physical exertion, the Exercise Mix focuses on keeping your body's sodium levels carefully regulated. Lim discovered that the rampant headaches plaguing his pro riders were not induced by a lack of fluids, but rather, a lack of sodium -- a very typical symptom of dehydration. Essentially, your kidneys regulate fluid retention based on the body's concentration of sodium. When sodium concentration is high, your body is forced to hold on to that fluid to dilute it. But when your sodium levels get too low (ie: through sweat loss), the opposite happens and your kidneys must expel that fluid.

Lim's mix is designed to keep your body's sodium balance carefully regulated, maintaining hydration while also slowing diuresis. With diuresis slowed, you'll be able to pre-hydrate and drink more before a race without needing to make those three inopportune bathroom breaks right before your call-up. If these concepts around a sodium-based formula sound familiar, that's because they are -- Lim's drink mix contains nearly four times the amount of sodium in many convenience-store sports drinks, putting it on par with emergency-grade rehydration salt formulas like Pedialyte, and those used by the World Health Organization to combat severe dehydration.

The athletes that helped Lim develop the Exercise Mix weren't just complaining of headaches. They were also suffering from severe stomach bloating and flavor fatigue. The second half of Lim's solution was to ensure his drink was easy and pleasurable to consume day in and day out. To accomplish this, every ingredient from the Exercise Mix is naturally occurring or naturally sourced from real fruit, which ensures you're not putting anything in your body that's been chemically formulated or enhanced. In short, if it wasn't here on this earth before you were, Dr. Lim and his team refused to use it.

The ingredients are: sucrose, glucose, sodium citrate, potassium citrate, calcium citrate, magnesium citrate, freeze dried fruit, citric acid (a natural preservation agent from pure lime juice), and ascorbic acid. Notice the pronounced absence of the 'natural flavors' found in so many other sports drinks. Part of what makes the Exercise Mix so uniquely palatable even during prolonged periods of exercise and constant re-hydration is the lack of a savoring agent. Generally, chemically-derived flavoring agents like those ominous 'natural flavors' tend to remain on your palate, causing flavor fatigue, and in larger doses, wreak havoc on your gut.

The Exercise Mix uses real lemons, limes, oranges, and raspberries, which are freeze-dried and pounded into powder. This creates a refreshing, super-clean flavor that's easy on your stomach without a lingering aftertaste that wears out its welcome halfway into your race. It means you're not just getting a 'flavor' of lemon or orange, you're getting actual lemons and oranges in the mix. This is one of the many fundamental breakthroughs behind the Skratch Labs drink mixes. Whether you're staying hydrated during a 24-hour endurance race, or re-hydrating after a grueling criterium, they simply taste great.

Lim and his team created two drink mixes, optimizing each for different levels of physical exertion. This Exercise Hydration Mix has a slightly higher salt content, making it Skratch Labs' on-bike mix, best used for periods when your heart rate is up and you're sweating. Because this mix has a supremely high absorption rate and is not a natural diuretic, it's excellent as a preventative measure against dehydration while you ride, when you stop at an aid station, or immediately after your workout or race, because you can drink a larger volume of it at a time without painful bloating. This is due in part to the drink's exceptionally low levels of acidity, and lack of chemically-enhanced flavors.

The Skratch Labs Exercise Hydration Mix is available in Lemon Lime, Orange, or Raspberry. Each one-pound package should provide approximately twenty (23 grams dry), 500ml servings.

Quite Nice

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Skratch is refreshingly simple stuff that gets the job done. Pretty much just powdered dehydrated fruit and salt, with well balanced flavors. Love the matcha and lemons and pineapple flavors. Not crazy about the raspberry flavor.

Tasty and satisfying

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have been using this stuff on my long days out and it has been great! Really is a lot better then just drinking water and tastes wonderful. I like using the caffeine to help keep the focus when I'm getting drained.

Great crisp taste

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Tastes quite natural and works well. Also really great when using with iodine in the backcountry as it totally masks the weird iodine taste.

The Best

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've used many hydration products over the years and Skratch hands-down works, and tastes, the best. Great, natural ingredients and no weird aftertaste.

Perfect for Sensitive Stomachs

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have lots of stomach issues when I race or ride hard but the Skratch products seem to be easier to digest. Hydration is key and Skratch is my first choice for hydration/calories on the bike. Don't really love the raspberry flavor (I love raspberries normally) but all the others are delicious.

It works

I normally just drink water and supplement with gels and shot blocks but for those mid-summer rides keeping a bottle of skratch around helps stave off the cramps.

    Great product

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I just started using Scratch, and it has made a huge difference in both the distance and speed of my cycling. Highly recommend Scratch.

Good for training, not so much for races

I've been using Skratch Labs products for quite some time, and I dig their products. This year, while competing in the NY Triathlon Relay, Skratch couldn't quite hold up to the rigors. I cramped up majorly right before making it back to transition, and had to hop with my bike to the transition area. To it's defense, I still managed to race at 1.4 mph faster than last year. But, I can't say I feel confident that it will meet my demands in the future. But it's great during training.

Keeps me going, easy on the stomach!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great taste, not too sweet, easy on the stomach, great on the bike fuel. I struggle with IBS issues so I've tried all sorts of nutrition drinks for cycling and Skratch is currently my go to. The Matcha Tea is my favorite but I would drink any flavor.

      Pretty good stuff

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Used on 40+ mike rides during summer, and it seems to have done a better job at keeping me hydrated than water alone (which I used exclusively in the past). So, I don't have much to compare, but I got the orange flavor and it tastes good, cold or warm, and does its job as promised to keep you hydrated during hot and humid weather.

      This stuff rocks

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I personally use all things Skratch for my hydration needs. If a review from every single employee does not convince you to purchase this product here is a review from a client of mine on his first experience with Skratch:

Review on Skratch Labs - Exercise Hydration Mix with matcha green tea + lemons:

The packaging is just like the photo shows, unlike another review stating it comes in a different size. Powder comes with a scoop inside for proper dosage, and has a light green color. Product mixes really quickly and adds green color to the water. The taste is very subtle, enough to give you good taste, did I say tastes good? It does have a nice taste. Other sports drinks have strong sugary taste, this is naturally flavored. Other rehydration liquids like Pedialyte are on the salty taste, some people are not used to this so Skratch Labs is on the good side.
Energy Facts: Matcha green tea caffeine is better than coffee, it has no spikes and scratches, instead it is smoothly regulated due to its phytonutrients slowing your body's absorption of caffeine, better skin, better breath, and more nutrients than coffee. It has 8mg of caffeine per serving, normally a cup of coffee has 95mg of caffeine.

Powder was mixed in 16 oz of water and it quickly dissolved.
This review is based on one hour of high performance tennis training.
Intake started few minutes after practice when sweating began until empty. Energy felt stable but with a kick from the caffeine giving a feeling of alertness which comes handy in sports.

      Running Review
Ran for a mile uphill, had some sips during the run but finished the 16oz bottle afterwards, I felt hydrated and didn't go looking around for the water fountain after an hour workout.
This is a hydration mix I will continue to test at least until I finish the package.

This review is only for the Matcha Green Tea that has 8mg Caffeine, other flavors might not have the same effects.

Thanks Backcountry for having this product available and introducing it to me when I had no idea what the product was when I saw it, grabbed it as an extra item to my order and I might repeat!

      Matcha and Lemon Please

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Best hydration drink on the market! I meant to buy the lime mix, but hit the match and lemon by accident. It was an amazing accident, perfect flavor for a day of adventures.

      My Staple

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have, and continue to use everything under the sun as far as nutritional products go; but Skratch has been my go-to electrolyte and lighter calorie exercise hydration drink mix since it was released.

The flavor is light enough to drink at any temperature, but has enough energy and electrolytes to sustain you for up to 2 hours on the bike without much else in the way of nutrition.

Easy to say, any time I am riding for 2 hours or under, my bike is always outfitted with 2 bottles of Skratch Exercise!

My favorite flavors are the Matcha/Lemon and Raspberry; I always have several bags of each on hand at all times.

      deceptive packaging - be careful!

I ordered two varieties - orange and matcha+lemons to try out as Osmo seems to be out of business now. What I got was matcha green tea and lemons. My package was completely different from the picture on this website. Disappointed in skatch labs and whomever wrote up the ad.

        It's the Best!

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Skratch Labs is simply the best exercise hydration mix ever. My favorite flavor is Pineapple, but they're all quite delicious and great on or off the bike.

        Does its job

Tried some of the pineapple flavor. It doesn't taste like crap, which is nice, and it helps me stay hydrated on rides.

          Make the Switch

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I used to use other hydration/ride fuel products before switching to Skratch, and in hindsight I realize that I was dealing with upset stomach on occasion. More importantly though, I found myself having to drink more water with the other products, which may speak to the better hydration that this stuff provides. In any event, I find that the flavor is the part I love the most. My favorites are pineapple and raspberry, which are more subtle flavors than those found in other products, but they don't taste like garbage when they heat up in your bottle and are just plain easier on the stomach. Probably has something to do with the more natural ingredients as well if I had to guess.

How often can I take it ?. I usually hike about 15 miles every time (7 hours)

Usage will depend on a few variables. I've shot you an email and we can chat about Skratch products. I use these and the fruit drops for all my mtn biking, climbing, hiking, etc.
