As good as it gets

Before now, you viewed your Ergo 3s as the pinnacle of Italian craftsmanship. We can't blame you -- we did, too. And while it seemed unlikely that anyone would ever top the technical features and comfort of the Ergos, Sidi chose to outdo itself. The Wire Speedplay Shoes look down from the mountain as the new rulers of cycling shoes, and at 60 grams less than the Ergo 3s, we understand why.

Sidi's previous flagship shoe, the Ergo 3, was an incredible piece of cycling gear that re-wrote the book on comfort and stiffness, but Sidi hasn't attained its dominance by resting on laurels and leaving innovation for its competitors. While the Ergo 3 utilized three different closure systems, the Wire is based around a single system -- the new Techno 3 buckle, yet another great innovation from Sidi. Most notably, adjustments of each of the shoe's instep and forefoot buckles is significantly more intuitive and easier to do while in the saddle. Loosening each buckle is a simple affair -- you can pinch both buttons on either side of the buckle to unwind the line closure, or you can toggle each button for extremely precise incremental adjustment. Tightening the shoe should also be familiar: just open the buckle's switch and wind the buckle. Sidi uses a supple, low-friction, line material to keep the buckle action smooth. Not only does the Techno 3 make the shoe's overall aesthetic even cleaner, but it also allows for an even greater degree of micro adjustability and fit consistency across the entire shoe. This ensures that you get the perfect fit every single time you buckle up for a ride. And for those who prefer as snug a fit as possible, the shoe's tongue and instep strap have both been padded generously to allow for supreme comfort with tight buckles.

Returning from the Ergo 3 is the superlative carbon fiber sole. It shares the same construction method that Sidi developed with its Carbon Lite sole, yet they've taken out 38 grams in the process. Even with the weight savings, you'll get the same kind of stiffness and razor sharp power transfer you've grown to expect from Sidi.

Also returning from previous top-shelf offerings is Sidi's vastly improved Heel Security System (or HSS) to keep your foot positively planted in the shoe. By means of a small allen key, it's an adjustable, rigid composite band that closes the shoe more securely over your heel to anchor it in place around your Achilles. So, no matter how much power you're pouring into the pedals, your heel will stay in place inside the shoe. It's a detail that allows you to cinch down the straps of your shoes less tightly -- giving you more comfort along with more security.

With a degree of engineered flex in the Carbon Sole and a secure and slip-free heel, you won't have to worry about hot spots. And you don't have to worry about heat in the rest of your feet, either, with the Wire's combination of Lorica microfiber and ballistic mesh -- giving you comfort, fit and durability.

The Sidi Wire Speedplay Shoes are available in the color Vernice White and in odd and even sizes from 39.0 to 48.0. Please note that these shoes are designed for use with the Speedplay cleat system and come supplied with the Speedplay cleat protectors. We also offer the Wire shoes in 3-hole cleat compatibility.

Best shoe ever and worth the price

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am a Sidi fanboy. I've tried other shoes, and always go back to Sidi. I got a great deal on a set of DMT Prism Speedplay shoes, and was totally disappointed with the fit. I ponied up the money for the Wires and am in love. My previous Sidi shoes didn't really need replacing but were over ten years old and I wanted a Speedplay specific sole. The Wires feel like slippers and are the most comfortable road shoe I have ever worn. I do wish there were more color options with the Speedplay sole, but the white is very visible on the road, and the Vernice material easily wipes clean.

Some key installation items...

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Some key items to watch for:
1) The Sidi manual say to torque the 4 mounting screws (per shoe) to 4-5 N-m but the Speedplay manual says it should be 2.3 N-m. A quick call to Speedplay confirmed that 2.3 N-m is the correct torque.
2) The mounting screws that come with the cleats are 4x11mm. But these are too short to give a safe mount (per the Speedplay technical support rep). The proper screws should be 4x13mm. The Speedplay rep shipped me a set of 4x13mm mounting screws right away and for free.
3) Great customer support from Speedplay!

Slick Shoes

Perhaps the most PRO looking shoes out there... That and they are STIFF, the "Flex" Sidi talks about in their write up is not noticeable, but then again I'm coming from the Sidi composite sole. The 4-hole drilling makes mounting new cleats super easy, and adjusting them even easier! Be warned they do take some breaking in as they are completely Vernice and are rather rigid to start with. I've put 700miles on them since the new year and they are just now starting to feel molded to my feet. Expensive but perhaps the last shoe I'll ever buy.

Error in above list of features

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The Sidi Wire Speedplay shoes (4 hole cleat) do NOT have the vented carbon fiber sole. Maybe the three hole cleat shoes have this feature. I still love these shoes, vented or not.

The outlet shoe shows only the 4 hole cleat...

The outlet shoe shows only the 4 hole cleat system on the bottom. Are there size 42 in the outlet shoe with a 3 hole cleat pattern?

Responded on

They are both the 4 hole Speedplay pattern. The difference between the outlet colorway and the other one is the season, otherwise they are they same shoe.

In case you were wondering, the Sidi Wire does come with the "carbon sole protector kit"that is required per Speedplay install instructions. This is a thin piece of sheet metal that fits between the Speedplay cleat and the shoe to prevent damage to the carbon sole. Be sure to keep it lubed!

yep, worth it!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

The Sidi Wire shoe is amazing. I was impressed from the first time that I tried them on, and I continue to be impressed every day. As with all Sidi products, the fit/finish is second to none. They are as comfortable and functional as they are beautiful.

As with all shoes, these may not be right for you. Every foot is different, and we all have different needs. Sidi tends to run a little narrow, and tends to have a tighter toe box, but they have made some wonderful adjustments to these shoes. The Wire is special in that it can offer more of a custom fit and therefore more comfort. The closure system is brilliant and can be rapidly adjusted on the bike. Even more important, the ratchet system holds, even over the longest, hardest ride.

Overall, the best shoe out there (especially for speedplay specific soles). I love these things and I look forward to years of comfortable and powerful riding. Thank you Sidi!

i have the sidi Ergo 3 size 46 but it could...

i have the sidi Ergo 3 size 46 but it could be a bit wider it fits perefect all else but my toes go a bit numb after riding is 46.5 wider or will Sidi be bringing out a Mega Fit for larger feat

Best Answer Responded on

The half size up will be a little wider, but you will have to try them on to see if it makes enough of a difference for your feet. With regards to the "Mega" option you mentioned, the Wire is currently only offered in standard sizes. No indication of a "Mega" Wire any time soon.
As you may have discovered, Sidi tends to favor riders with narrower feet. If you are getting sleepy toes in your Ergo 3's, you are probably going to get sleepy toes in these. The Wire and the Ergo 3 are very similar in shape and fit. That said, the Wire is a slightly more adjustable shoe than the Ergo 3, and it's significantly more comfortable (on my feet, at least). Have you tried different socks (thinner/barefoot)? How about a different insole? How about a different shoe (Shimano makes great shoes, better for wider feet). There are loads of options out there. Good Luck!
