New breed.

Few manufacturers are as synonymous with tradition as Sidi, so any time the venerable cobbler expands its line with a new model, we take notice. The men's Dragon 4 Shoes are one such example, and they fill out Sidi's menu, inhabiting the middle ground by combining elements of the Absalon-tier Drako and the recreational Cape Air models.

Instead of the tongue ventilation on the Drako or the all-over perforations of the Cape Air, the Dragon 4 features strategic mesh paneling to keep your foot cool. It also mimics the Drako by doing away with Sidi's traditional ratcheting buckle in favor of a pair of Tecno 3 wire buckles, but it further supplements the fit with a high-security hook-and-loop strap over the toe box. This enclosure system is outfitted with Sidi's Soft Instep 3 strap and adjustable heel retention device, which secure the heel and diffuse pressure to eliminate sloppy fit without unnecessary discomfort.

The shoes ride on Sidi's SRS Carbon Composite sole, a nylon platform that's reinforced with carbon fiber for additional stiffness that also incorporates a degree of engineered flex. The sole isn't as stiff as Sidi's top-end road shoes — but that's a good thing. It doesn't sacrifice mobility during hike-a-bike situations and it also won't spend several hours hammering you unforgivingly in the metatarsals across terrain that makes even the cobbliest of the Northern Classics seem like a pleasure cruise on pristine tarmac.

Of all the technologies that Sidi built into the Dragon 4 in order to help it weather the storm on the trial, the Sole Replacement System (the SRS in SRS Carbon Composite sole) may be our favorite. SRS is simply the ability to replace the lugs and guard plates on the outsole, refreshing the Dragon 4 by keeping its belly armor up to the job of subduing unruly terrain. The SRS system also accommodates two toe spikes and can be fitted with an additional toe guard for even more longevity.

Perfect fit, great cx shoe

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 46

Great fit for my feet, heel retention system makes dialing in easy. Love the yellow color it's a true beautiful color! The tongue cushion is best in the business, very comfortable. Coming from the Mavic Fury shoes, I broke a couple of treads of the bottom, with Sidi everything is replaceable!

Good for my feet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 41.5

First of all, the yellow is glorious. It's not fluoro like the newer shoes. Just bright, look at me yellow.

My previous Dominators were 42 and fit well. I sized down to 41.5 from 42. The Dragons felt longer and wider. I'm a 41.5 in specialized as well.

They feel stiff and hold your foot well, especially the heel cup. I prefer having more adjustment since my feet are somewhat wide at the toe. Finding shoes that fit properly has been difficult because of this, but the Dragons hit the spot for me. I can loosen the Velcro to relax the fit while still keeping the rest of the shoe tight.

Nitpicks:

The adjustment dials are garbage compared to Boa. You really do have to give the shoe a few minutes to warm up before the final tightening. So you have to leave the lever flipped up to make adjustments on the fly. It's difficult to distinguish it from the rest of the dial while riding, especially with gloves on. And this leaves them exposed to damage from rocks, trees, and crashing.

The sole is minimally protected and can be a bit slippery on wet wood. But, they don't look out of place with your roadie friends for those of us who use MTB pedals for everything.

Overall I love them and am super happy after the first few hundred miles.

Great review David. I agree about BOA being superior to the Tecno 3 buckles.

Worst Sidi shoes wver

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: 42.5

I have had the Dominator, Dragon, and Dragon 2's, and the Dragon 4 does not come close to matching them. It is totally uncomfotable, has very little side support, and it is raw carbon between the cleat area and heel of the shoe so if you have to step on a peddle midfoot it slides right off. I've have worn them 3 months now and the soles are destroyed as well. These shoes are a complete dissapointment. There are diffinetly not mountain bike shoes.

Another top shoe from Sidi

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 43

These new Dragon 4 shoes are near perfect. Comfortable, easy to walk in, and easy to adjust on the bike. Another winner from Sidi. The only brand of cycling shoe for me.
