SPD turns 24.

Ever since its debut in 1990, Shimano's SPD (Shimano Pedaling Dynamics) clipless pedal system has been the number one choice of commuters, recreational roadies, and XC monsters looking for bombproof pedals. The new XTR PD-M9020 Trail Pedal celebrates SPD's first quarter century by doing something that many of us haven't managed with age: losing weight.

It's not much, but Shimano claims that the M9020 is down from 379 grams in 2014 (the XTR PD-M985) to a svelte 376. This weight loss doesn't come at the cost of performance, though. In fact, the only difference between the XTR M9020, which is classified as a "trail" pedal, and the line-topping XTR M9000, which gets the sexier "race" distinction, is the former's inclusion of a large contact plate around the outside of the pedal itself. This dramatically increases the size of your pedaling platform and, in our minds, is well worth the 69 grams of added weight — especially considering that it's still lighter than almost any other pedal in Shimano's mountain range. The increased platform also affords the convenience of occasionally wearing shoes without cleats.

The Shimano XTR PD-M9020 Trail Pedals are dual-sided and compatible with SM-SH51 cleats (provided), SM-SH56 cleats, and the SM-PD60 reflector.
