At the top of the pedal podium.

In the world of mountain bike pedals, the arc in a graph that depicts the relationship between quality and cost would gradually and predictably rise along both axes. At the farthest side of the price axis, however, there would be a sudden and dramatic upward slope in quality, and that's where you find the Shimano XTR M9000 Race Pedals.

To be clear: even Shimano's most basic pedals represent outstanding value in their durability and performance — pairs that cost $40 eight years ago are still bouncing around on countless bikes, for example. So, you wonder, what's to gain in the not-insignificant price jump from those to these? For one, the M9000s lose even more weight than their already-lithe predecessors. Pedals' inert weight is virtually negated in their relationship to one another when spinning around a crank, but that weight still counts on the scales. You're pulling those things up the climbs, too, and the almost 100-gram difference between the XTR Race pedals and heavier, cheaper pedals out there can be huge on a long day of riding or racing.

What else is worth those dollars? What makes the pros fork over their own cash for a pair when their pedal sponsor isn't Shimano? What makes riders carry move these pedals from bike, to bike, to bike, to bike, to bike? More details: the titanium hardware that comprises the spindle and cleat binders receives a proprietary fluorine treatment to boost the metal's ability to shed mud and dirt, boosting pedal life and allowing the pedal to clear grime quickly for rapid and reliable engagement regardless of riding conditions. The new M9000 version also receives a revised axle/bearing interface for even greater longevity and smoothness, while the bearings are still wide-set to maximize stiffness and responsiveness under load. The list goes on and on… so just trust us. These are very strong contenders for the best MTB race pedals out there, period.

The Shimano XTR M9000 Race Pedals come with SM-SH51 (single release angle) cleats and are also compatible with SM-SH56 (multi release angle) cleats. The pedals' entry and release tension can be adjusted via a hex screw on the back of each pedal on both sides.
