While single- and double-chainring drivetrains are becoming more popular for mountain bike use, there's no denying that many riders still prefer the superior range that's of a triple. For these traditionalists, Shimano still builds its XTR Front Derailleur in a Top Pull Triple option, also known as the FD-M981. XTR has been providing fast, crisp gear shifts for over 20 years, and it's not slowing down any time soon. After all, if you're going to have all those gears, you owe it to yourself to have perfect shifting.
The FD-M981 is a high clamp, top pull front derailleur. This means that it clamps to the seat tube, as opposed to the direct-mount alternative. Additionally, it requires that your cable be routed down the back of your seat tube, as opposed to running up from underneath the bottom bracket. If this fits your bike, you'll appreciate the near-instant shifts provided by the high-leverage parallelogram. The cage is slightly larger than the FD-M986, which is the version optimized for a double-chainring. And by enlarging the cage, Shimano ensures perfect shifts over your entire gear range.
As you'd expect, it gets all of the weight saving measures reserved for Shimano's top-tier group set, so your perfect shifts won't come at the cost of any extra grams. For the best possible shifting action, we recommend pairing the FD-M981 with a full XTR Dyna-Sys drivetrain.
The Shimano XTR FD-M981 Dyna-Sys Top Pull Triple Front Derailleur is available in one size. Please note, the included shims allow compatibility for frames with 28.6, 31.8, and 34.9mm diameter seat tubes.
