Functionally, XT SM-RT86 Disc Brake Rotors stop equally in comparison to Shimano's apex XTR line. That's because of Ice Tech, a shared technology on both models. The difference between the two lies in a slightly lighter XTR spider that's reserved for gram-obsessed racers.

In reality, most of us aren’t going to feel the benefits of a few grams lost when they're so centrally located to the hub. However, what we are going to profit from is the three-piece Ice Tech Rotor. It is essentially two pieces of steel optimized for friction sandwiched over an aluminum core.

This means Shimano is utilizing the high thermal conductivity of aluminum, where other manufacturers solely use steel throughout the braking surface. Additionally, the quicker cooling alloy core more efficiently transfers heat to the alloy spider. The resulting cooler operating brakes will last longer and provide more consistent stopping in the most trying conditions.

Additionally these rotors are compatible with SLX and Deore calipers if you'd like to upgrade existing brakes. Shimano's XT Ice Tech 6-Bolt Disc Brake Rotor SM-RT86 are available in three sizes -- 160, 180, and 203mm.

Unanswered Question

Has anyone ever used these on avid bb7 mechanical road breaks? If so how are they?

I went downhill and I'm not dead...

...so they must work!

I bought these to up the size on my Yeti sb95c. When those wheels get moving on the down my lever pressure was a little higher than I wanted.

I went to a 180 in the rear and 203 in the front with the metallic pads...wow! What a treat!

Breaking control is amazingly controllable and I haven't gotten ANY fading even on very long descents.

They came true out of the box and were simple to install!

Do it!

Best Rotors

Great 2 piece design that is very stiff, quiet and quite light. Can't go wrong with these.

Worth the hype

While I've only used these for a few days, these rotors are amazing & worth all the hype. I recently rode both DH & Enduro at Mammoth. My XT brakes with 180mm ice tech rotors on my enduro bike worked better than the 203mm brakes on my DH bike.

Adding to my original review, these are excellent. I'm basically a giant in the world of mountain bikes (6'3" / 250lbs) and these coupled with the XT brakes on my T275 work flawlessly every time.

Do these come with a bolt kit, or do I need to buy one to mount them onto the hubs?

Best Rotors on the Market

I struggled with a more expensive, Italian brand and was never satsified.
These rotors are legit!

Amazing Brakes!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Bought these rotors to replace stock XT shimano rotors. Normally ride AM but have been running these in DH/PARK all summer long and these are amazing. After a few runs noticed that my brakes still had great modulation and were not fading like my stock brakes occasionally do! em the most. Been running them for around 6 months still look new...
Would buy again!

I upgraded to 180mm to reduce fatigue on long downhills. It's been awesome so far. My 160mm rotors were getting a rainbow discoloration from getting so hot, so I figured it might be a good time to replace them anyway. If you have 160mm rotors and want to get 180mm rotors you will also need this part:
and specify front or rear.

Single Rotor

Hello All,

I just wanted to verify for everyone interested in this item that it is a single rotor and not a pair.

Happy riding!

Best Brakes... EVER

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

True, like other AVID convertees... these are the best. You really don't know how bad your brakes are until you run these XT/XTR's. Man, never thought a bike brake could be so effortless, have so much stopping power, or be so quiet. Fantastic. 1 year now, and still flawless.

Brakes that Work

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Everything that i have ever heard about XT or XTR brake has been good. Well, it is true, these brakes are by far better that the Avid 7's that i just came from.
