Item # SHI0408

In terms of performance, these Shimano XT Ice Tech Disc Brake Rotors are the functional equivalent of the XTR units. However, as you might expect, they aren't as sculpted and take on a few extra grams in comparison. The big headline is Ice Tech, and it's the result of some forward thinking by the folks at Shimano.

Technically these XT Ice Tech Rotors are a composite. Two layers of stainless steel are bonded to an aluminum core. So you get the benefits of both -- the durability and powerful braking properties of stainless and the lightness and heat dissipation of aluminum. If you've ever boiled your brake fluid and experienced serious fade, enough to scare you, then you'll appreciate that heat related fade has been reduced by 35%. And cooler running rotors will help your brake pads last longer as well.

Aluminum also gets the nod for the spider. This type of construction typically saves a few grams over one piece stainless rotors, but the biggest advantage is that the aluminum spider, again, dissipates more heat and adds rigidity, so your rotors will warp less and be less susceptible to getting dinged out of shape.

The Shimano XT Ice Tech 6-Bolt Disc Brake Rotor SM-RT86 is available in three sizes -- 160, 180, and 203mm. Even with the Ice Tech sandwich construction, they're the same thickness as Shimano's other rotors at 1.9mm, and they're available to fit 6-bolt hubs.

Premium Heat Mgmt

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Shimano, unlike anyone else, is really pushing the envelope when it comes to brake efficiency and heat management. Do they have a history of heat issues you ask? No, they just know what's best for you. These IceTech rotors are a fancy name for aluminum sandwiched between stainless steel. They do it to get heat way from the pads/mineral oil in the system. Duh. Does it work? It works fabulously. With these rotors you will be able to ride those brakes all the way down that steep descent time and time again because they make brakes, not courage.

Best to be used with only Shimano brake systems.

Shimano Does it Again

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

6 bolts allow for installation on just about every wheelset. They are very durable and provide a great braking surface for SLX, XT and XTR brakes. They last about two years depending on how much you ride your brakes and how much you weigh. They are awesome!

6-bolt goodness.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

With a steel braking surface and an aluminum core, these rotors run cool and quiet. Combine them with XT or XTR calipers for hassle-free descending.

warps easily

I am not impressed. This rotor severely warped after just 5 runs with Saint brakes. It seems that once they warm up...they get bent and warped easily. The black center arms actually twisted on me. I didn't crash or anything I was just riding DH

Excellent product!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am a big guy (6'2" 310lbs) and needless to say when I go DH riding I have always had issues with brake fade. These rotors are an amazing design (aluminum core with stainless steel faces). You get the great heat dissipation of aluminum and the durability of stainless steel. Given my size I am more concerned with performance than weight, but what also surprised me about these when I swapped out my old standard Stainless rotors was that they weigh about half as much. Excellent product. My only complaint is tht the next level up of the ICE series only comes in a Shimano spline configuration and not the industry standard 6 bolt. That one adds aluminum cooling fins to further dissipate the heat. This is a great idea that really works.

XTR without centerlock

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

for whatever reason, shimano decided to only make centerlock XTR rotors. i think the 6 bolt is just a little heavier, but these are basically the same thing. i have ridden these HARD and could smell them on one particular decent. despite this, there was no brake fade, and they cooled off quick. pair these with xt or xtr brakes and you are in for a treat.

1st upgrade I made to my Tallboy

Braking is much quicker than with the stock rotors.

Worthwhile the upgrade!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Installed this rotor in place of the standard, entry level jobber that came on the rear of my Rocky Altitude 970. The difference was noticable right away. Strong stopping power with a firm solid feel. Installed fresh pads at the same time and I'm happy with the upgrade.

Will these work with Shimano Saint M-810...

Will these work with Shimano Saint M-810 Brakes as well? 203mm for from 180mm for rear?

Best Answer Responded on

yes. I have the Saint Brakes with these rotors.. I have 203 mm for both front and rear. You will need an adapter for your bike which is very simple to install.

Responded on

Acop -- which adapter would we need for this?

Responded on

Amanda Batty - you would need item SHI0108. As for which one, it would depend on the frame brake options. It would be either Post Mount (PM) or International Standard (IS). The best way to describe it would be the Post Mount are threaded into the fork or frame whereas International Standard is not threaded and the bolt would just slide through the fork or frame to thread into the adapter.

Worth The Price

I am running a 180 in the front and 160 in the back, which is plenty of power for my XC bike. The 2 piece design is much stiffer than the traditional solid steel rotors. These things can take a beating and come out true every time.

Perfect with XTR Trails

Add that extra little bit of cooling and I havent had any over heating since installing these. Awesome. Perfect for the XTR trails or XT brake sets.

Just added a little bling to the bike- and they stop too
