Description

Functionally, XT SM-RT86 Disc Brake Rotors stop equally in comparison to Shimano's apex XTR line. That's because of Ice Tech, a shared technology on both models. The difference between the two lies in a slightly lighter XTR spider that's reserved for gram-obsessed racers.

In reality, most of us aren’t going to feel the benefits of a few grams lost when they're so centrally located to the hub. However, what we are going to profit from is the three-piece Ice Tech Rotor. It is essentially two pieces of steel optimized for friction sandwiched over an aluminum core.

This means Shimano is utilizing the high thermal conductivity of aluminum, where other manufacturers solely use steel throughout the braking surface. Additionally, the quicker cooling alloy core more efficiently transfers heat to the alloy spider. The resulting cooler operating brakes will last longer and provide more consistent stopping in the most trying conditions.

Additionally these rotors are compatible with SLX and Deore calipers if you'd like to upgrade existing brakes. Shimano's XT Ice Tech 6-Bolt Disc Brake Rotor SM-RT86 are available in three sizes -- 160, 180, and 203mm.

So Icy

If you're running Shimano brakes and your hubs have a 6-bolt mount, these rotors are the best that Shimano has to offer. Light, sweet looking, and they seem to stay cool enough. Sure the XTR-level rotors get the fancy radiator fins, but then again, most of us probably aren't willing to buy Centerlock hubs for the negligible cooling benefits.

Great performance, priced right and very durable. I tend to be hard on brakes and the XT rotors seem to be able to take more punishment than most. Jonathan gives a great piece of advice in the review below; pay attention to the torque specs! Also, stagger tightening the bolts in a "star" pattern and work up to the torque spec.

Easy to swap out

    Bent my rotor on a rock. A new one showed up quick and was so easy to change out. Pro Tip: pay attention to the torque specs when installing. One wouldn't want brake discs getting loose. Use blue loctite.

      If you don't know about ice teach, you should. These rotors use different types of metal sandwiched together to dissipate heat way better. No more brake fade on the way down.

      Shimano IceTech are the best rotors on the market, especially if you are running Shimano brakes. the heat dispersing tech behind them ensure that your brakes run as needed throughout your ride even after long descents.

      Running these on two bikes right now. My hope rotors were much lighter but developed a shift no matter how tight I made the bolts. So I put these on because I remembered their mounting bolts and clips. No problems so far. Just work.

      No the ice tech rotors but a little cheaper, I am not a EWS pro racer or anything so I went with these because I have ran Ice Tech rotors and couldnt tell the difference. These are solid and of course shimano quality.

      Are you sure they aren't Ice Tech? It looks like it says it on the rotor in the product pic.

      Shimano knows brakes, whether is calipers or rotors - they put out a great product. I've run XT for many years and in my opinion you cant beat it for the price. Their SLX is also a tremendous option. Simple, hassle free and perform at a top notch level!

      I've been using XT rotors for the past two seasons with XT Brakes. Bang for the buck it's the best Brake System I've used. They work great and are extremely reliable. Highly recommended.

      Gettin' Stopped

      If you've been riding the same rotors for sometime now, and their stopping power is getting weak, it's prolly time for some new ones.

      The Ice-Tech is where it's at with these guys. If you need to stop hella quick, it's gonna happen with the rt86's. Easy to install, so you can get back out and get rippin'

      These work really well. The stop on a dime making it easy to take more speed into the beginning of a turn and scrub speed exactly when needs. Throw a counter steer and proper foot placement into the mix and you get flow-tasticness.

      No vent fans

      My bike's original wheels came with vented ice tech rotors that Shimano supplies standard on my trek domane.
      These cannot be fitted on this and I'm also not sure if these are 'real' ice tech rotors as yet don't have thre same compound.
      Regardless, these are great brakes regardless and will work with any application you desire.
