Don't let the number of Shimano's XT front derailleur options scare you. Really there are only two types -- top swing and bottom swing. This XT Direct Mount Triple Front Derailleur FD-M781D is a high direct/bottom swing type. The direct mount design is easier to install and has a built-in housing stop for foolproof cable routing. This minimizes exposed wire and therefore minimizes contamination that could affect your shifting performance.

This XT Direct Mount Front Derailleur is identical to the clamp-on FD-M781 derailleur, save for the lack of a clamp. Instead this one has a flat inboard surface with an upright rib that corresponds to the groove in the flat Direct Mount you'll find on your seat tube. One bolt holds it all together and your only adjustment will be up and down in relation to the chainrings. Since there's no way to twist the derailleur around the seat tube, it goes on lined up perfectly with the chainrings and your shifting should be spot on once the cable tension and limit screws are set. The limit screws are angled outward to facilitate adjustment for convoluted rear suspension designs as well.

The Shimano XT Direct Mount Triple Front Derailleur FD-M781D is specifically designed for use with Dyna-Sys 24/32/42t triple cranksets and XT 10-speed chains. The cage radius and plate shapes will optimize the shifting performance. The maximum chainring size is 42 teeth.

Unanswered Question

Is this the correct front derailer for the direct mount 2015 Santa Cruz Highball carbon frame? Thanks

Smooth and durable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Shifts are smooth and the derailer has lasted a long time. I can't attest to the weight though and I don't think it would make much of a difference.
