The standard for a reason.

Look around at any trailhead, any race, or anywhere, and you’ll see a whole lot of Shimano XT Brakes. Why? They’re trusted, durable, powerful, and reliable—pretty much the holy grail of what is perhaps the most important component on your bike. • Hinged clamp for easy mounting
  • 22mm ceramic piston
  • Integrated Radiator Fins on the brake pads disperse heat
  • XT brakes work with either standard XT rotors, or Ice Tech and Freeza rotors
  • Brakes sold individually as either Left/Front or Right/Rear

Set it and forget it

Having replaced Avids with these, Shimano once again proves XT to be $ for $ the best value and performance one can buy. These things are the bomb. They have greater power, articulation, and tool free adjustability than any Avid, Magura, or Formula brake I have used.

These things are the bomb!

Stopping power for days and easy to install. What more could you ask for?

How long is the hose on the rear brake?

5 stars

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I was just going to write a review on how good these brakes are. However, you can read the 21 other 5 star reviews on these brakes and find out how good they are.

Bottom line: For a middle of the road brake set these brakes are hard to beat. Stopping performance is spot on, heat fade doesn't exist, and they look sick! Just buy them, you won't find many options at this price that work better.

Huge improvement!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I had been riding on the mechanical disc brakes my bike came with for a few years and have decided it's time for an upgrade. These are just what I needed! The stopping power and range give me a lot more control on downhill sections. They are really easy to install and adjust, and look great. The cable length is a little long but you can shorten/have them shortened.

How long is the brake line on the left/front unit?

Responded on

The front brake line is about 1000m in length.

A kilometer for a brake line seems excessive. Is there a second "m" missing in that answer ;-)

I want to replace my Avid Elixir 5 brakes with Shimano XTs. Do I need to replace my rotors to be compatible and do I need the caliper adapter for front and rear.?

Does these brakes come with the brake pads included?
Thanks.

do I have to buy an adapter to work with 180 front and 160 rear?

Responded on

It depends on your Fork options, most likely if you run a pike or a Float 32/34 you will need an adapter for the 180 front rotor. Most frames now a days are compatible w/o adapters for 160 rear rotors. Please give me a call directly, or one of my coworkers and we can get you set up with the correct parts the first time.

I replaced the front brake on my Stumpjumper (Avid Elixir 5) with this brake and its great. Good stopping, lots of control, easy to install. I just ordered one to put on the rear wheel. Note: the brake felt a little soft on the first ride. The manual mentions that this happens. It tunes in early in the first ride and feels normal after that. If you're looking at this and the XTR I'd say go with this. Best bang for the buck.

are these the I-spec B?

Best Answer Responded on

The XT brakes in question are I-Spec B versions. brett@competitivecyclist.com

Best Brakes

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

For the money I don't know if you can find a better brake. Super powerful and a great lever feel. Very easy to bleed also. I would recommend these to anyone.

I don't see how you could improve.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Unless you like spending money needlessly these brakes are the equal of XTR with a small weight penalty. You will have to cut the hoses but the hardware is included and you won't loose the bleed if you are careful. When it comes time to replace the pads skip the fins and get organic pads for quieter operation. True one finger operation and adjustable reach make these the best at a great price.

I don't see how you could improve.

2 years, no bleed, going strong!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I ride hard, mainly gravity style rides on my blur LT. 6" rotors. I ride my bike at least 2x a week, and haven't had to bleed these brakes in 2 years. they feel better than any sram brake I've felt.

Hello, I have a Giant Trance X1 with Avide Elixer 3 brakes. I want to replace them and was looking at the Shimano XT, will these brakes work on this bike

Responded on

Michael, These should drop right on with very little work. Without seeing the bike, you may need adapters but likely it won't.

My preferred brake

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my go-to brake. This is the first change I make when I buy a complete bike and the only thing that is a constant between every mountain bike I've owned over the past 5+ years.

Best Stoppers For the Price!!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Preface: This review expresses MY opinion and NOT objective fact. I have been riding mt and road for decades and have ridden almost every brand of brake out there. As a proud American, I would love to buy an American product (made in Asia) over a foreign product (made in Asia) IF that product is better.
With that said, these brakes are EXCELLENT! I have not been impressed with any of the avid brakes I have ridden and I LOVED the Maguras but, for the price, I don't think anyone can beat good ol' Shimano XTs. In fact, I swapped out a set of older XTR 975 (2 gens ago) for these and experienced a substantial improvement. Solid modulation, little or no fade and they are bomb proof. Make sure you "mate" the pads to your rotor (youtube it) and you are good to go. My only complaint is that the brake hoses are LONG! I ride a Large frame and I would imagine these would fit Shaq's bike!
