Shimano's XT BL-M785 Hydraulic Disc Brake takes its design cues from the new XTR M988 Trail Brakes, and though these might not be as visually refined as the highly polished XTR units, the stopping power speaks for itself.

In addition to the excellent power and modulation, the XT Brakes provide easy adjustment to keep your fingers happy and intuitively in control. There's also a tool-free reach adjustment that you're able to dial on-the-fly, along with a free stroke adjustment that lets you determine lever-blade-to-travel before pads make contact with the rotor.

Also, Shimano reworked pivot location so that the arc of the lever mimics the natural movement of fingers for enhanced power. Servo Wave technology correspondingly comes into play here in order to adjust piston travel relative to lever travel. As you squeeze on the brakes, the gap to the rotor quickly closes, then slows to permit predictable modulation. This allows the pads to sit further from the rotors at rest for less chance of drag. The calipers house a 22mm ceramic piston for inspiring stopping power, and Shimano uses a banjo fitting for the hose attachment at the caliper. The calipers also employ Shimano's Radiator Pads that have integrated fins in order to dissipate heat and to reduce fade on long, hot descents.

The Shimano XT BL-M785 Hydraulic Disc Brake has hinged, split clamps for easy mounting. It comes as a pre-bled lever/caliper/hose assembly and its complete for each end of the bike -- except for rotors (sold separately). Shimano XT Brakes will work equally well with XT Ice Tech Rotors or standard XT rotors. Please note that this brake is sold separately as either Left/Front or Right/Rear.

I have two bikes that came with Deore brakes. When it came time to replace the crappy front brake on my trial bike, I went with XT because I'm familiar with the feel, and it has more (and easier) adjustment than the standard Deore system. The feel is very positive and confidence inspiring. The tool-less adjustment for reach is nice because I've had to make adjustments between rides with the Deore system. Not having to stop and get an allen wrench is nice. Haven't tweaked the free stroke adjustment because I haven't felt the need to.

It's no secret, these are great bang for the buck brakes. I feel bad saying "bang for the buck", because they really are top performing brakes. Some may prefer the feel of a other brakes, but these things function superbly.

Sorry everyone else...

    Shimano still makes the best brakes on the market. These feel INCREDIBLE. I literally can't imagine a better brake. I've been riding a new set of XTs for a bit now and I'm floored. If your considering anything else, don't (SRAM, Magura, anything.) XTs are the best.

    Great Hassle Free Brake

    Easy to Install (as replacement to avid juicy 3's that had seized). Came pre-bled. Hose is a little long and I will have to trim it for the front brake but overall it works great and maintenance free so far.

    The latest Shimano XT brakes are hard to fault, with true one-finger operation whatever the conditions. Awesome, manageable power is combined with rotors and pads that kept on performing consistently. only small gripe is that running the levers very close to the grip exceeds the optimum leverage position of the cam – a XT lever without the cam, as found on the XTR Race brake, would be a 10/10 for me

    I crashed hard at Deer Valley and had to replace a brake. Never even considered replacing it with something else. These brakes just work. Easy to setup and install, great power and modulation. Just get them

    If you want brakes that perform, buy the XT brakes.
    I put them on my new (at the time) MTB XC bike in 2011, and still have them! They are just so reliable.
    When installed I paired with Goodridge Hydraulic Brake Lines and as such they haven't needed too much attention since.

    I've ridden the top of the Migura brakes. So far nothing even compares to Shimano's XT. Can't imagine how XTR must perform. Highly recommend.

    My third set

    I'm on my third straight bike that I built with XT brakes. They're easy to set up, low maintenance, have consistent power with good modulation, and the price is right compared to the XTR line. They've given me no reason to consider switching to another brake, and I don't hesitate to recommend them to anyone interested.

    I put these on another bike last year. They have great stopping power. They are shiny, and stand out a bit. Also will likely need to trim the lines and possibly bleed slightly as the pre-assembled cables are quite long.

    I have 2011 elixir 5's with 180 rotor. Is it a straight switch out for the rear

    You would want to get new rotors to go along with the XT brakes since they have designed the system to work best with the IceTech rotors, but yes, you can use the standard adapters that are currently on your bike to bolt these brakes to.


    Trying to figure out what adapter I need. I have a 2012 Trek Superfly Al Elite. It has a Fox front fork but I'm not sure of the exact model. The bike came stock with Shimano SLX M666 disc brakes, so I'm not sure if the adapter would be universal to Shimano hydraulic disc 6-bolt brakes. Any ideas? Thx, R

    As long as you are using the same rotor sizes the adapters you have now will work with these brakes.

    Do I need an adapter? I have an older (2008?) Gary fisher paragon with a rock shox Judy race fork. Also curious if it will work with my avid 160mm G2GS rotors?

    You don't need one if you using a 160mm rotor for the front. The rear will need a SM-MA-R160 P/S rear for a 160 rotor. I recommend you use Shimano rotors with these.

    It looks like the question was answered below that pads come with this order. Can someone tell me if the pads are organic or metal -- assuming pads come with this?

    UPDATE: also, can someone let me know what type Shimano adapters, if any, I need for these? I have a 2014 Cannondale Scalpel 3. Front and back rotors are 180mm (I'm 6'4 and ~205lbs with gear). Current adapters are for Magura MT2.

    Assuming that the pads are sintered, to work with the shimano ice tech rotor. You will be safer with the proprietary shimano adapter for your fork/rear brake mount

    You will need item # SHI0108 for the front, SM-MA-F180 P/S Front and for the rear you need SM-MA-R180 P/S Rear

    Are the calipers ISO or post mount? I need to know what adapters I need (if any).

    These brakes are Post mounts and may or may not need adapters depending on the model of your bike. I have these brakes and love them!
