A new look.

Unless you've been meditating in a cave for the past couple of years, you've most likely caught wind that Shimano created a carbon fiber Ultegra pedal. Yes, the PD-6700 carbon pedals were 60 grams lighter than their aluminum counterparts, and they were moving closer and closer to resembling a discounted Dura-Ace iteration. Needless to say, they were widely celebrated. For this reason, Shimano opted to utilize the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' strategy for the new Ultegra PD-6800 SPD-SL Pedals.

Even while these come within 35 grams (per pair) of the Dura-Ace 9000 pedals, Shimano has ensured that the pedals still deliver the same blissful retention and instant release that we've grown accustomed to from SPD-SL pedals. In fact, the retention mechanism hasn't changed at all. The retention setting is still adjustable by wrench from the aft portion of the pedal.

As for the carbon pedal body, the 6800 design differs from 9000 through its use of short carbon fibers instead of Dura-Ace's long carbon fibers. Essentially, this is where the extra weight comes from. Additionally, the carbon has been molded with a machined aluminum sleeve that houses the two bearings in each pedal. The whole assembly spins on a stainless steel spindle, and the new pedals retain the replaceable stainless steel wear plate that sits atop the pedal body. Additionally, it supports the SPD-SL cleat for maximum lateral stability, while allowing a hard surface for your cleat to float against -- +/- three degrees.

The Shimano Ultegra PD-6800 SPD-SL Pedals come with a set of SM-SH11 floating cleats (the ones with the Yellow wear tabs) and all of the necessary mounting hardware. The float is three degrees in either direction. The stack height is 13.7mm. And as always, the retention preload is adjustable to allow you to dial in the perfect entry and release tension.
