Slow your roll.

Going balls to the wall is fun until you take a corner too fast and end up limping home, resembling a zombie-movie extra. To save you from looking like a card-carrying member of the undead hordes, Shimano redesigned the Ultegra 6800 Brake Calipers, with plenty of inspiration from the industry-leading Dura-Ace, to offer improved stopping power, more sensitivity, and smooth, easy action.

Traditionally, Shimano's brakes have used a single-pivot design, but the Ultegra 6800 uses a dual pivot, which allows the caliper to be placed symmetrically over the tire. Combined with a cable that runs directly out of the middle of the caliper, this gives the 6800 balanced tension, so braking forces are distributed evenly to both sides of the caliper for smoother, more reliable braking. The arms feature a friction-reducing twin bearing system that allows them to pivot extremely smoothly, so you get instant and sensitive feedback from even light touches to your brake levers.

Shimano also designed the Ultegra 6800's arms to lie closer to the rim, which provides more sensitivity with less effort. Feathering your brakes will be a silky smooth experience, and hard braking won't require the grip strength of a gorilla. Even the new brake cables have smooth low-friction design. The Ultegra 6800 is also set up to accommodate thin brake pads, perfect for riders rocking wider 28mm tires.

  • Dual-pivot caliper
  • Center-routed cable
  • Twin-bearing arm pivot system
  • Spring tension adjuster
  • Adjustable toe-in
  • Close-to-rim arm placement
  • Low-friction polymer-coated cable
  • Accommodates thinner brake pads for 28mm tires

Stop on a dime

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Increased stopping power and clearance. You cant go wrong with these brakes. I ride a lot of canyons and these have more then enough braking power when screaming on the descent. The give me the extra confident I need to take the corners a little faster.

Great Stopping Power at a Great Price

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm not one who shy away from spending money on quality bike components, but I try to do so wisely. Here's a great place to save money by NOT going top shelf. All the stopping power and good looks of Dura Ace without the price tag. Damn near the same weight too.

Are these brakes compatible with 105 5700 shifters?

yes, i have a mix of 105 and ultegra 5700, 5800, 6700 and 6800 on two bikes and it all plays well together.

    Worth the weight....

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

At only 40 grams more than their Dura Ace brothers and providing (in my opinion) equal performance, the Ultegra 6800 calipers are a definite win! It actually took me a few rides to get used to the increased stopping power over my previous brake setup, which shall remain nameless.... but costs twice as much. Accurate, predictable braking, very low maintenance. Surprisingly easy to work on when a tweak here or there is needed.

    Great Upgrade

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These replaced the stock Tektro calipes that I had been using for a few years with an Ultegra wheelset. The Ultrega brakes look way nicer and offer increased stopping power. They feel more precise as well, great value.

    Great Value and Excecution

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are arguably the best valued brake calipers on the market. Fantastic braking power, great construction, and a good price. I'd recommend these for anyone who wants top level quality without paying pro-level prices.

Is this a set of front and back?

    Best Answer

Yes this includes a front and a rear brake caliper.

Does this brake set come with cables and housings?

    Best Answer

Typically the cables and housing are included with the brake levers, not these calipers.

    The best I've had yet!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Two versions of older 105, one version of Ultegra 6700s, Campy, Tektro, and now these.

HOLY CRAP! Top notch feel and excellent stopping power. I avoided upgrading to these in the past because of the slight weight penalty. These came on the new bike and I'll tell you the marginal increase in grams is worth the best brakes this side of DA!

    Plenty of stopping power

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

My last bike had Tektro brakes-my new Cervelo is outfitted with this new generation Ultegra 6800 brakes and boy what a difference. Plenty of stopping power and they look great too. Practice using them-a panic grab at the brake levers will leave you with a flat spotted tire.

Any idea what the reach is on these? I have a new endurance frame bike that came with full Ultegra, except for the long reach Tektro calipers for the increased fork/tire clearance. I would like to upgrade the brakes. Thanks!

These are a standard Short Reach road caliper - 39-49mm.

    Crazy powerful

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These newer ultegra brakes are ridiculously powerful if they have a good braking surface, say, a good pair of mavics or shimanos etc. Id go as far as to say I was actually a bit surprised how well they work. I would recommend getting used to the way they respond before you go bombing down a big ol' hill at a blistering speed. You cant go wrong with shimano quality and these will definitely not disappoint.

Do I need specific cables with the 6800 calipers?

I have just fitted the calipers to my current cables but I,m unable fit the cables into the caliper recess unless I remove the end ferrels?

If they're anything like the 6700 brakes they are designed to insert the cable straight into the female part of the cable tension "twirl". Toss the cable ferrules Shimano expects you don't need them anymore apparently.
