Bang for your buck.

Seventy dollars separates the SH-XC61 Shoes from the next up in Shimano's line of race-worthy and highly respected cross-country kicks. That difference boils down to Shimano's custom-moldable technology, which means the SH-XC61s still feature a carbon-reinforced outsole, the Dynalast system, a synthetic leather upper, and polyurethane traction lugs.

Intended for competition and recreational use alike, the SH-XC61 uses Shimano's XC Race outsole that is low-profile and reinforced with carbon fiber. This translates to excellent support and power transfer, which is further enhanced by hook-and-loop straps in an asymmetrical layout to control internal volume. For overall tightness and security, Shimano's micro-adjust, ratcheting buckle allows incremental changes, and its broad, angular, and offset design is easy to use on the trail.

The three straps are part of Shimano's Dynalast last, which addresses the entire shape and structure of the foot for class-leading fit, comfort, and performance. This includes the synthetic leather uppers and the tongue's shape. To keep your feet cool, Shimano placed ultralight open mesh at the points of ventilation.

Shimano's SH-XC61 Shoes - Men's come in either White or Black, and sizes range from 40 to 48.

  • Carbon fiber reinforced Dynalast outsole
  • Two-bolt cleat compatibility
  • Polyurethane traction lugs
  • Ratchet strap and hook-and-loop straps

Great shoes!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

These are my first mtb shoes, and I have been using them a lot, they look pretty nice and have good ventilation. I will recommend them to all of my friends.

Don't waste your money

  • Fit: True to size

These are a waste of money. Started falling apart after one use. I think the problem with the design is that the soles are not made from a single mold. The cleat portions of the sole started breaking off after first use, and it got worse from there.

Description states the three straps are in an asymmetrical layout and a reveiw refered to the straps crisscrossing. Do the straps crisscross?

Nope. The bottom strap goes from inside to outside. The middle goes from out to in.

Look great, performance is "meh"

This is my third pair of shimano shoes over the years. They seem to fit me best--not super wide, not narrow--kind of in the middle, leaning towards the wide side of the spectrum. These fit ok in the width department, but I was surprised at the amount of flex in the sole. Every shimano shoe I've owned in the past has been super stiff. These definitely have some flex in them and you can feel it when you stand on the pedals. I would not use these with eggbeaters or the older shimano SPD's (the ones without the extra contact area on the sides, like the M520's). The shoe just flexes too much. Using them with a pair of XT's (M780's) and the extra contact area on the pedals helps a bit. I use these for road as well as off road so maybe off road you wouldn't be able to tell as much since you typically don't do prolonged standing climbs on a mtb, but the flex is definitely there--a little disappointing, but not enough for me to want to return the shoe.

I tried these and some Giro Codes and these definitely fit my feet better. Not sure I really like the criss/cross middle strap--my feet go numb real quick unless I keep the middle strap fairly loose. I can really cinch it tight and feel locked into the shoe, but after 20-30 mins my feet go numb. Not a big fan of the stock insoles either. The arch seems too high for me and there's a weird ridge running right up the middle of the arch. I took them out and used the insoles from my old shoes.

On a plus note these shoes look the part--the white/back with red tread looks great. The other shimano shoes I've owned lasted for years and years. Assuming these will do the same.

Are these flexible enough for CX racing? Think about having to carry the bike ~10yds, could you walk well enough to do it?

    Thanks!

Definitely. For a shoe with a carbon sole I am surprised how much flex they have. These would definitely work for 'cross.

    great shoes

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

stiffest pair of shoes that I've owned so far but they aren't so stiff you can't walk in them. The sizing is on point and the straps work perfectly. I use them for MTB and road riding.

    Leaving friends in the DUST

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

Since switching to these shoes I'm at least 65x faster than I was before. None of my friends believe I am the same person. Is he doping? How can he be so fast? He doesn't even shave his legs! On a serious note these shoes are great. They fit exactly the same as my other shimano shoes size 46. They are extremely stiff and very light. For the price point they are one of the best shoes in their category. Looking forward to years of use! Love them!

    Upgraded to 5 stars

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small

This is an excellent shoe. Light, sturdy and well-constructed. The problem is that it runs small. I ordered the same size (44) as my old and worn Shimano MTB shoes and it was a full half-size too small. Back for a larger size. Learn from this and you'll give it 5 stars.

OK, more to say. I got the size 45 by exchange and it's a full-on 5 stars. Granted, I'm only a 3x week commuter for about 17 miles per day but it's an outstanding shoe. Light, well-made, great buckle/strap placement, stiff where it should be and a good, snug fit in all the right places. Size it correctly (up 1/2 US size) and you'll love it.

Would that make you a US10 or US10.5 in regular shoes? How much room do you have in the toe? I was thinking of ordering the 45. Thanks!

Sorry for the delay. I usually wear a US 10 in street shoes. My old Shimano MTB shoes were 44s. These were 45s and fit perfectly.
