We've all found ourselves gasping in the heat on a long, afternoon climb in July because our ride was delayed so we could finish watching that morning's Tour stage. In these situations, we typically lack the vision to see how the ingenuity responsible for the clean, precise shifting of an Ultegra drivetrain could somehow be harnessed to make the robust summer sun more bearable. Shimano did make that connection, though, and the result is the men's Hot Condition Jersey.
The Hot Condition consists almost entirely of a barely-there, mesh-like material of the type that we all love and expect in hot weather kit for its ability to facilitate evaporation and help keep us cool by encouraging airflow. But, this being Shimano, the jersey's cooling features exceed the obvious with the Heat Ventilation System, which accounts for the airflow running across your helmet and shoulders and down your back. Rather than simply staying open like mesh, Shimano suggests that the system actively pulls this cooling air through the jersey, lowering a cyclist's body temperature at the point where the sun tends to hit the hardest.
Shimano's ingenuity extends to the rear pockets, too, with the side pockets angled for ease of access in the saddle and the center pocket taking up a bit more space than usual for more storage space. It now fits everything from tubes and CO2 to sandwiches — a real coup for the PB&J aficionados who don't fancy smashed sandwiches on rides. The jersey is finished with a sweat-proof zippered pocket, reflective elements on all sides, and a hit of silicone grip at the back hem.
