The face of road pedals.

Over the generations of Dura-Ace, we've become more accustomed to seeing the gradual incorporation of carbon fiber. And while this seems like an interpretive advancement, Shimano has remained steadfast in its purposeful placement. So, instead of senselessly making every facet of the Dura-Ace group from carbon, we see it in places of direct benefit, like the mid-spider carrier of the cassette, the arm of the rear derailleur, and at the platform of the Dura-Ace PD-9000 SPD Pedals,

So, you might be wondering, aside from the carbon composite body, what's really changed with the 9000 pedals? Well, a great deal, actually. To start, the pedals feature a wider fit positioning adjustability in order to create a more stable platform than what was available with prior iterations. This system has also been paired with a new cleat, as well. Together, the 9000 pedals create a more extensive platform for power transfer, while simultaneously providing an increased level of comfort.

And while the aforementioned contributes to an increased pedal efficiency, Shimano has gone to immense lengths to redesign the definition of comfort with the 9000 pedals. The principals of the cleat retention system are centered on a front/center pivoting system. And within this new design, the SM-SH12 cleat plays a pivotal role. This is because the interaction between the cleat and pedal limits toe movement and lateral play by restricting float to +/- one degree. So, the system basically corrects your bad habits before they happen. Together, this will minimize knee strain, hot spots, and contribute to absolute efficiency. However, we advise you not to be intimidated by the shortened degree of float, as this is not to be confused with the strength of cleat retention, only the degree of lateral movement. But, on that note, Shimano did keep one of our favorite features of Dura-Ace pedals, the spring-loaded tension adjustment. This feature is accessible at the rear of the pedal, and is able to dial-in your preference for the difficulty of cleat exit — we tend to hammer this down on predictable terrain like the track.

For durability, you'll find that the pedals continue with the usage of a stainless steel top plate.

The Shimano Dura-Ace PD-9000 SPD-SL Pedals are available in the color Black and in one size. Please note that these pedals are recommended for use with the new SM-SH12 cleats.

Here's what others have to say...

Don't forget...

Shimano Dura-Ace pedals are awesome; arguably the very best in the sport. The reviews here (and everywhere else) are correct.

But don't forget to buy Shimano cleat covers also (part# SH45). The soft yellow, red, or blue rubber edges ("pontoons") on Shimano SPD-SL cleats wear out pretty fast if you walk around without wearing cleat covers.

Solution: Buy Shimano cleat covers. Avail online for about $17 (or less).

    Really like these

    • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Fairly new to cycling (about 4 years), Masters Cat 4 racer 5'10, 170#. Rode on Look Classics since the beginning but they wore out! Just got these, and did a century for my first ride. Not sure how my old bones would like the 1 deg of float but no aches - actually less than my old ones which were 9.5's. I didn't think I'd notice the wider platform / cleats, but it is very different feel to me for the better. Another thing I do notice is that they are very secure - I needed to loosen the tension up a bit to release without applying what i feel is too much pressure, since they are really meant to keep you feet attached.

    Solid as a rock!

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

Came from Look Keo 2 max carbons which worked fine for many years, but these are definitely a step up. The precision and great mechanical feel of these make them a joy to use. The looks always had a little play, besides what was supposed to be there, but these are absolutely rock solid, no play, and they will keep your feet clipped in even under extreme force. They may not be the lightest, but I doubt there are pedals that functionally work as well as these. I could also tell the platform was larger and more comfortable than the Looks. Very pleased with the purchase and I'm sure I'll be using these for many years to come.

Is the stainless steel friction plate / body cover on the PD-9000 replaceable?

    Great pedals

Light, strong and with a good pair of shoes you will notice better pedaling power than with less expensive pedal on cheap shoes. Well worth the money.

Can I order these in the +4mm spindle length?

I assume that PD-9000 pedals come with a set of cleats, correct?

Yes, come with the blue cleats (SM-SH12 cleat). 2 degrees of float.

    Shimano Dura Ace 9000 pedals

Simply the best, Period!! I've never used a better pedal. Strong, light, easy in/out. What more could you want.

      Light and Strong

      • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Nothing better then a Durace Pedals.

      Hey RobP720163,

This pedal is compatible with the yellow cleats. You can actually use this pedal with any of the cleats that Shimano offers.
