Description

King of the mountains.

The carbon clincher. For much of its short life, the design has been plagued by ailments ranging from the annoying to the downright terrifying. However, this isn't to say that it's still languishing in a limbo of inadequacy. With the Shimano Dura-Ace 9000 C24 Carbon Clincher Wheelset, it seems like Shimano somehow got hold of your carbon wishlist and checked off all of the boxes. The C24 features Shimano's widest profile ever, its strongest aerodynamic advantage, and an unparalleled responsiveness. Even more impressively, the C24 provides all of this at a weight under that of Zipp's 202 Firecrest Carbon Clincher.

Shimano's Dura-Ace 9000 C24 wheelset epitomizes the illustrious reputation of the Dura-Ace title. In fact, for the first time, Shimano has fully committed itself to achieving a superior level of aerodynamic advantage. As a result, the C24 was engineered in accordance with the newly developed Blade and Accelerating SPEED concepts. After extensive wind tunnel research, both of these development platforms gave way to Shimano's most aerodynamic wheel profile. The designs are hinged on the front and rear wheel having two different depths -- 21mm at the front and 23mm at the rear. This creates an even smoother airflow then varied front and rear rim depths. Additionally, when coupled with the 20.8mm rim width, the wheels promote an increased stability in crosswinds, as well as higher levels of lateral rigidity and vertical compliance when compared to the WH-7900 C24.

With the C24 , the weight of the wheels is centered at the hubs. This means that the rim weight is reduced, and thus the rotational weight is decreased. The beneficial results are staggering. Coupled with the aerodynamic 21/23mm rim depth, you have a wheelset that gets up to speed faster, and requires less rider effort to pin it and hold it. The centering is made possible by a clever Shimano design that's principled in the use of Shimano's angular contact bearings. The bearings' shape allows them to be pushed as far outboard as possible. This makes the hub a wider platform for the spokes to stand on, and accordingly, it makes the wheels capable of higher spoke tensions for a more compliant ride quality. Most importantly, though, the C24 features Shimano's widest hub flanges ever. The wider distance between flanges drastically increases torsional and lateral rigidity -- think about the difference between someone pushing you with your feet together, and then again with your feet shoulder-width apart. Simply put, this design guarantees an effective power transfer so that your wheels put out as much as you're putting in.

For the build, Shimano incorporated 16 radial-laced spokes on the front wheel, and 20 two-cross spokes. For even further efficiency, the C24 wheelset uses ultra-stiff, oversized A7075 alloy axles, and a quick-engaging titanium freehub body. Every wheel is 100% hand-built, and features Shimano's own high modulus carbon fiber composite. For braking, the wheels feature an aluminum brake track for a predictable stopping power that won't overheat the rim. Altogether, each component of the wheel has been designed as a symbiotic system for the ultimate in aerodynamics, efficiency, and pure speed.

The Shimano Dura-Ace 9000 C24 Carbon Clincher Wheelset is available in the color Black and with a Shimano compatible freehub body. The wheelset tips the scales around 1364 grams, and is compatible with the new Dura-Ace 9000 11-speed shift system.

Does this Shimano Dura-Ace 9000 C24 Carbon Road Wheelset (Clincher) come with the wheel bags?

Hi, I have a set of WH-9000 C24 wheels that are now 9 months old and noticed that the lacquer is peeling on the rim. You can scratch it off using your finger nail. You can also see blisters in the lacquer the size of a pin head. Has anybody else observed this issue? Comments will be appreciated. Thanks Clive

Shimano will exchange your flawed wheels for a new set (that they say will not have this problem). This can be done through your LBS.

Fantastic wheels

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had these wheels for a few months now and put several hundred miles on them. They are super light, stiff, well made, the hubs are top-notch, and paired with the Open Corsa CX tires they are the best wheel I have ever ridden. I climb/descend for a majority of my riding and the aluminum braking surface was important to me, and performs excellent. Highly recommend.

C-24 Clincher Wheel Set

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought these to save my Zipp 202's for races. The only advantage my 202 Tubulars have over these is on a high speed decent. Zipps handle cross winds much better. These obviously brake better with a aluminum brake track. They are much stiffer and corner better, climbing I can not see any difference. May not be scientific, but these feel firmer and safer.

i have campy record electronic 11 speed on my bike can i buy these wheels and find a campy spec cassette that will work?

Responded on

I have read that Shimano and Campy 11-speed cassettes and chains are interchangeable; this means you could buy a wheel with a Shimano freehub, install a 11-speed Shimano cassette and use it with a Campy drivetrain. See the following: http://velonews.competitor.com/2013/09/bikes-and-tech/drivetrain-compatibility-hidden-in-plain-sight_303199

thanks very much Scott i think i am set

I saw this ad from another sight, Shimano Dura-Ace WH-9000 C24 CL . Are these different than Competitive Cyclist 9000 C24 wheels? These were also different color. If they are different, what are their differences?

Can I use those wheels with my 10-speed shift system?

Responded on

Yes,
They come supplied with an additional spacer. You'll need to use that spacer, and the existing spacer that you already use with your 10 speed cassette.

Is there a rider weight limit specified for these wheels? I'm 185-190 lbs.

I've been using the previous generation of these wheels the past several years. The WH-7900-C24-TL. During this period, my weight has varied between 215 and 225 pounds. The wheels have been flawless. No issues at all. I would expect the WH-9000-C24-TL to be every bit as robust. When I go 11 speed, this is the wheelset I'll use.
