Description

Electronic precision in multiple positions.

One of the great advantages of going for electronic shifting is that you're not limited to having a single set of shift levers -- perfect for time trial bikes where people want to have shifters within close proximity of their fingers at all times. With the Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 ST-7971 Integrated Brake Levers, you can have your shifting and braking at the same place on your time trial rig; half of what you need to be covered for both bullhorn and aerobar shifting.

This unit is a bullhorn bar-end brake lever that has shifter buttons built into the pivot. From afar, it looks like your standard bullhorn brake lever. A slender carbon-fiber lever blade attached to some sort of firm housing that has an expander bolt behind it. In this way, the ST-7971 sets up like any other bar-end brake lever on the market. Drop the end plug into the bar end, use an Allen key to expand the bolt and it's secure.

What is different is that Shimano built their Di2 electronics into the pivot housing. There are two buttons on one side. One is for upshifting, one is for down shifting. Since this is a lever set, there are similar buttons built into the second lever as well. Here's one of the best things Shimano has done. While the buttons have been set at the factory, they can be reset at home using the Shimano Di2 Diagnostic Tool, SM-EC79. This means that the buttons are just buttons. You can set up the levers so the buttons are on the outside of the bars, or you can set them up on the inside, and either way, you'll have the rear shifting on the left and the front shifting on the right. You can use the upper button for downshifting and the lower button for upshifting or vice-versa. Shifting, by the way, feels like a mouse click.

Once the levers are in, you run the wires, insert the brake cable and housing, threaded through the bars, and you go. Shimano's Flight Deck computer can also be attached to the system, as well as secondary shift pods on the aero bars. Wires, cable, and housing are sold separately. Please Note: These shifters are NOT compatible with Ultegra Di2.

  • Shifter buttons at the brake lever allow you to change gears from your base bar, bar ends, or both, which makes the mid-turn shift much less clumsy
  • Carbon fiber levers have adjustable reach, so you can dial in precisely how you want your setup to feel
  • Only compatible with a full Di2 system
