(Almost) everything you need.

While our Shimano Ultegra 6870 Di2 Groupset without Power Kit doesn't include everything you need to get your bike rolling (more on that below), the performance it affords once up and running is likely more than enough: Accurate and effortless shifting, even under full power; minimal maintenance; fantastic battery life. All of this and more makes the groupset a fantastic upgrade for your ride, if not a great reason in itself to build-up an all-new bike for yourself this season.

The magic here begins with the Ultegra Di2 shifters/brake levers, which, like the Dura-Ace Di2 levers, are fully programmable, allowing you to program actuations like how many gears up-shift or down-shift per push of the lever, which lever actuates which derailleur, and in which direction, and more. Those levers boss around a very obedient drivetrain, as well. The Ultegra Di2 front and rear derailleurs utilize nearly identical servos, motors, and other hardware (they're Malayasian-made, as opposed to being produced in-house by Shimano in Japan like the Dura-Ace ones) to ensure shifting that's almost as quiet, quick, and precise as Dura-Ace - of course, not quite, but only barely. The battery used on both system is identical, however, meaning you can go thousands of miles between charges on average. This groupset isn't cheapened by a lower-end chain or cassette, either — you get proper Ultegra 6700 bits, and an Ultegra standard bottom bracket is included, too.

The 6800 crankset stands out as a beautiful piece of engineering, too. Once again, using Dura-Ace as its inspiration, you'll notice there is no comparison between the prior iteration of Ultegra and the new crankset. The 5-arm spider is absent and in its place is a 4-arm crankset, which not only matches rigidity of Dura-Ace while saving 26 grams of weight, it also is compatible with both standard and compact chainrings. Gone are the days of needing two sets of cranks for two sets of chainrings. Additionally, they were built using Shimano's Hollowtech II construction — the same method used in its big brother. The groupset includes Shimano's SM-BBR60 English Bottom Bracket.

The Shimano 6800 brakeset doesn't play second fiddle to the drivetrain's excellence and value, either. Shimano used a dual-pivot design, so the mounting bolt is no longer also the pivot. As a result, the brake arms are now located symmetrically over the wheel and work independent of the mounting due to an integrated rolling cam. The cable stop is still to the side, but the new dual-pivot design allows any pull to apply equal tension to both arms. In addition, the arm placement is closer to the rim, which, coupled with the equal pull, drastically increases modulation. And if you run larger tires, Shimano is now producing a thinner brake pad for tires up to 28mm wide. Shimano claims that the new brake design has 10% more stopping power than its 6700 series.

The Shimano Di2 Ultegra 6870 Gruppo is available with three different crank arm lengths: 170mm, 172.5mm, and 175mm. The "compact" 50/34t chainring combination is the only one currently available, and two cassette ranges are available: 11/28t or 11/32t. Please note that this package does not include our Shimano Di2 Power Kit (part number SHI0568), which is necessary for installing Di2 on virtually any road bike.
