Why We Like The Drakon Saddle

Selle SMP saddles have a distinctive look that's focused on making your ride as comfortable as possible. The model here, the Drakon, is one of its most popular, and like the rest of the brand's lineup, goes about eliminating the all-too-common discomfort issue of excessive pressure at the perineum region and the surrounding soft tissue. It possesses all of Selle SMP's innovative designs yielding pressure-free support in the saddle which ultimately leads to more comfort over longer rides, This Drakon Saddle uses stainless steel rails to save a chunk of change of the pricier carbon version.

The Drakon is best suited for cyclists with medium-width sit bones, who find their pant size between 33 to 37-inches at the waist and favor a fairly minimal amount of padding. At the front of the saddle is the characteristic "beak" shape designed to promote a flat base while seated, without excessive pressure. The other signature SMP feature is its pronounced central channel which further reduces pressure on the pudendal nerve and surrounding soft tissue. Moving to the back of the saddle, it receives a pronounced rocker for support on climbs and helps divide body weight between the rear and lower part of the ischial tuberosity region, also known as the sit bones. This shape also helps reduce overall pressure on the coccyx, or tailbone, while riding over rough surfaces.

The Selle SMP Drakon is available in one size, 276 x 138mm, is handmade in Italy and has a claimed weight of 315 grams.

Great saddle, shape gives it an edge

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Size Bought:
138mm
Height:
5' 10"
Weight:
155

After a couple months indoor and few outdoor rides I'm ready to declare this saddle a winner. At first the shape put different pressure which took a little getting used to but after that it has been great. The rise in the rear of the saddle is noticeable in the force you can put down more easily. It gives your gluts something to 'push against' when putting the power on. I didn't think the dipped nose would matter but I see the wisdom in that as well, in not snagging your shorts/leg and slightly relieving pressure on the soft tissue. Only negative is that I feel the ridge along the cutout is overly hard. It would be better if this sloped in toward the cutout or was a bit softer. But still give this 5-stars!

Done Looking for the Right Saddle

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I've tried probably close to a dozen saddles in my life and none of them ever seemed quite right. As luck would have it I ended up stumbling on this saddle and now I'll never buy another! My main problems with most saddles are that I end up going numb after 20 or 30 miles and when I say numb, I mean numb in all the extremities, which as most cyclists know isn't a fun experience. Well, first ride on this and I didn't have any numbness. I thought maybe it was because it was only about 20 miles so I took it on its first century the next weekend. Turns out after trying new shoes, new chamois, new gloves and everything in-between, it was my saddle causing all the problems! While the shape may look a little goofy to some, it's the key to what makes this so perfect. I'm so happy and finally and most importantly, I'm the most comfortable I've ever been on a bike. :)
