The SLR is one of the true classic saddles in cycling, but it's a bit thin on padding for the average mountain biker. That's why Selle Italia built the SLR XC Saddle from the same shell, and added enough extra padding for singletrack use. It also gets Vanox rails for durability and a reinforced cover that resists tearing better than the original. The resulting production leaves us pondering, why start from scratch when an adaptation is this good?
The classic SLR shape remains unchanged with the XC version, and with good reason. The flat profile and medium width made the SLR shape a favorite for long rides. Those who have ridden the road version of the SLR will notice that the XC receives extra padding. The padding delivers a boost of comfort on rough trails, although it retains the thin, responsive feel of the original. Additionally, the ergonomic wings maintain the 131mm width of the SLR, so you remain free of hot-spots, even after hours of trail use.
The nylon composite base is one of the essential pieces to the SLR's comfort puzzle. It has a 30% carbon fiber content, which keeps the shell stiff, while still allowing adequate flex for the saddle to move with you. The Vanox rails may not be as light as the Titanium options found on other versions of the SLR, but they do provide the added durability necessary for off-road use. And speaking of durability, the SLR XC employs reinforced edges in order to protect the saddle cover. This equates to added longevity, especially if you're crash-prone. Impressively, Selle Italia managed to incorporate all of the aforementioned, while arriving at a weight that's only around 170 grams.
