Designing a comfortable mountain bike saddle for riding long distances is a tricky affair. If a saddle has too much flex, you bob around while pedaling; too little, and you’re riding a brick. Too much padding, and your weight can shift around too much, which can lead to hotspots and blisters on your soft tissue. Selle Italia knows all of this, which is how and why it developed the SLR XC Flow Saddle.
Starting with its tried-and-true SLR saddle platform, the carbon-reinforced nylon shell’s wings get tapered down slightly to reduce the chance of snagging baggie shorts and also make it easier to move around on the saddle in technical situations. As per the “Flow” designation on any Selle Italia SLR saddle, a cut-out is strategically placed in the shell to direct weight to the ischial tuberosity, or your “sit bones," reducing pressure on nerves and vessels in your sensitive undercarriage, ultimately preventing the numbness that can occur with extended time or effort on the saddle.
The saddle’s lightweight padding treatment walks that fine line between excessive cushion and rock-like firmness, and the shell’s flex is tuned perfectly to make it comfortable for even the longest treks. Finally, for 2014, Selle Italia upgraded the SLC XC Flow’s rails from Vanox to lighter, stronger titanium, while also shaping them into a round 7mm profile to make the saddle compatible with virtually any seatpost’s clamp.
The Selle Italia SLR XC Flow saddle weighs 175g and has a height of 42mm from the rails. It measures 275mm long and 131 wide and is available in Black or White.
