Selle Italia SLR Kit Carbonio $324.99
A case study in super-light comfort.
The notion of a bike seat being comfortable and costing several hundred dollars are each, independently, absurd, especially to a non-cyclist. With that increased price, however, comes the engineering it takes to make that saddle comfortable, so the idea becomes less absurd when you take a closer look — and the 2014 Selle Italia SLR Kit Carbonio Saddle makes a wonderful case study.
Selle Italia created this 2014 model by sticking to the well-proven concept of the original SLR Kit Carbonio — a favorite among pros — and making changes only where necessary. Namely, the company introduced stronger Carbokeramic carbon rails, which not only retain the former carbon rails’ excellent ride quality, but they’re formed into a rounded 7mm profile, so the saddle will be compatible with virtually any seat post clamping mechanism. From there, the design stayed true: ultra-light and flexible nylon-reinforced carbon composite shell, durable Lorica covering, and just the right amount of EVA padding. The result is the same 125-gram, 100-mile-ready saddle that fights numbness and hotspots with uncanny consistency, now ready for an even wider variety of applications. It won’t be as soft, or heavy, as the SLS or Flite saddles in Selle Italia’s product family, but for many riders, that’s the idea.
The Selle Italia SLR Kit Carbonio saddle is 275mm long, 131mm wide, and comes in Black or White.
