Search and State S1-S Bib Shorts $210.00
An understated style that screams comfort.
We're going to share a little 'insider secret' with you, while every company designs its own apparel, very few actually manufacturer these designs themselves. Contrary to this methodology, New York-based Search and State creates all of its clothing in-house, from inception to production. Essentially, the founders of SAS wanted to own the entire development process, which is why a stateside manufacturing location was the only logical fit. Within this established production process, SAS is able to maintain a design focus that's settled on the functionality necessary of cycling, not the flashy look of it. And along these lines, you're not going to see any tremendous innovations, here. However, what you will see are small runs of technical apparel that are produced in Manhattan's Garment District. And because of this, SAS is able to place the highest emphasis on design, fit, construction, and using the best fabrics available. Its S1-S Bib Shorts are a testament to this, as the streamlined aesthetic not only looks clean and classic, but it also serves the higher purpose of functionality.
As an integral part of the development process, SAS was able to choose exactly what materials that it wanted to incorporate into S1-S. For the paneling fabric, SAS chose to use a custom USA-made nylon/stretch material. This medium weight fabric provides exceptional breathability, and rapidly transfers moisture to its quick-drying outer-surface. Additionally, this smooth fabric provides a moderately compressive hold, which, in turn, supports the muscle groups of the legs. As a result, these muscles are partially shielded from the fatigue-inducing effects of muscle oscillation that are derivative of road vibration. For the bibs' upper portion, the nylon/stretch fabric comprises the lower back and fronts of the straps. Above this, a lightweight mesh material was used for its smooth wrap, ventilation, and ability to efficiently wick moisture away from the skin.
Further demonstrating SAS' attention to detail, it dyed the S1-S' fabric to match its Black S1-A Jersey. Accordingly, you're given the option of riding in full-on stealth-mode if you so choose. You'll also find that the S1-S bib shorts were designed with a single fabric and with minimal panel design. This results in a fit that SAS calls a 'race-inspired slim fit.' And while many bib shorts blend multiple fabrics of differing fiber weights and composition, this approach typically leads to an excess of uncomfortable seams. However, the S1-S' lone material equates to fewer seams for a smoother transition from one panel to the next. Furthering the fit characteristics of these uninterrupted panels, SAS built both the bib shorts' uppers and lowers with a contoured design. Accordingly, each panel was cut to form to the cyclist's body while in motion, meaning that the bib shorts stay firmly in place throughout the various positions of cycling.
A custom CyTech chamois was used in the S1-S, as this proven insert is used to protect cyclists in many manufacturers' bib shorts. This chamois uses a variable density throughout the pad in order to support the regions that need it most, without impacting the ones that don't. And for CyTech, the support focus is primarily placed at the perineal, ischial, and gluteal areas -- the points most prone to distress from saddle pressure and compression. With its anatomic, Elastic Interface design, the CyTech chamois creates an abrasion-free support that promotes an increased circulation by protecting nerves like the pudendal.
And while SAS uses an understated style with all of its apparel, this shouldn't be confused with skimping on the details. In fact, we feel the opposite to be true, as the 'less-is-more' mantra is indeed a sound principle when designing technical apparel. Accordingly, the S1-S features wide, 30mm elastic-silicone leg grippers that are set in a clean-finished hem.
The Search and State S1-S Bib Shorts are available in four sizes from Small to X-Large and in the color Black.
