Description

Rolling in the dark.

Search and State isn't about catering to the 'lifestyle cyclist' any more than it's interested in reinventing cycling apparel as a whole. Instead, the New York-based manufacturer's design focus is placed on the functionality necessary of cycling, not the hype surrounding it. And along these lines, you're not going to see any tremendous innovations, here. However, what you will see are small runs of technical apparel that are produced in Manhattan's Garment District. And because of this, SAS is able to place the highest emphasis on design, fit, construction, and using the best fabrics available. Its S1-J Jacket is a testament to this, as the streamlined aesthetic not only looks clean and classic, but it also serves the higher purpose of functionality in less than ideal conditions.

The matte-black S1-J looks unassuming on the surface, as it uses one primary fabric throughout, no visible logos, and only two zippers. That's it. However, we assure you that this minimal design is nothing short of intentional. Basically, SAS wanted to get it right from the beginning, building a minimal jacket that didn't scream 'look at me' like the cycling apparel du'jour. In other words, the S1-J provokes beauty from its subtlety, not from the superficial.

SAS sourced Schoeller's venerable C-Change fabric for the construction of the jacket. The material has made a name for itself in the cycling world for its bionic climate membrane that independently reacts to changing temperature. This layer works by closing when exposed to cold and opening in response to warmth. So, in simpler terms, it traps heat when you need it and vents moisture after it's produced. In addition to the membrane's seemingly symbiotic relationship with its environment, it's also fully water- and windproof.

In addition to the aforementioned, you'll also find that the S1-J was designed with both a single fabric and a minimal panel design. This results in a fit that SAS calls a 'race-inspired slim fit.' And while many jackets blend multiple fabrics of differing fiber weights and composition, this approach typically leads to an excess of uncomfortable seams. However, the S1-J's lone material equates to fewer seams for a smoother transition from one panel to the next. Furthering the fit characteristics of these uninterrupted panels, SAS built the jacket with a contoured design. Accordingly, each panel was cut to form to the cyclist's body while in motion, meaning that the jacket stays firmly in place throughout the various positions of cycling. Additionally, the drop-tail uses no elastic, providing ample coverage while allowing it to 'float' over loaded jersey pockets. Thin, rounded elastic treatments were added at the cuffs, keeping the generously long sleeves in place at your wrists, without minimizing coverage while you're stretched over the hoods.

And while SAS uses an understated style with all of its apparel, this shouldn't be confused with skimping on the details. In fact, we feel the opposite to be true, as the 'less-is-more' mantra is indeed a sound principle when designing a technical jacket. Accordingly, SAS used just two durable zippers on the S1-J. The waterproof, two-way Riri Aquazip was used for the full-length front zipper, while a horizontal Riri zipper was added to access the jacket's single rear pocket. Overlock seam construction was used throughout, and a hidden SAS logo adorns the storm flap behind the front zipper.

The Search and State S1-Jacket is available in four sizes from Small-X-Large and in the color Black. SAS recommends sizing up if your measurements fall between the target numbers.

Two part question. Firstly, I'm 5'7, 135lbs with 35" chest. Would a size S fit? Would it fit a long sleeve top underneath? Secondly, how does a jacket like this compare to the Gore Xenon 2.0 AS Jacket in terms of waterproofness, breathability, and fit? What about compared to the Sugoi Neoshell Jacket? Thanks!

Superb Jacket

...and another stellar review by someone who actually purchased the jacket and is using it. The material and craftsmanship are both superb. The zipper is awesome - very durable, with large tabs that can be pulled while wearing gloves, and best of all it is two way - opens from both the top and bottom - allowing great control of ventilation. I have been riding in it daily (32 mile round trip work commute + 50 mile Saturday club ride) for the past 6 weeks in wet and dry conditions, temps ranging from high 20's to 60's in metro DC area with either an Ibex Giro wool jersey underneath (colder temps) or a Rivendell wool base layer underneath (warmer temps). I stay dry and comfortable. As noted by other reviewers - the cut is lean but excellent for biking - covers my rear and does not bunch up in front. I am 6'0.5", 185 lbs, 41" chest and 35" waist and I am very happy in the XL. I first ordered a L which fit with no room to spare. The XL easily fits over my XL Ibex Jersey, is not restricting with just enough wiggle room to spare (can put a smart phone in Jersey pocket underneath) but not enough to flap in the wind. As for the color and lack of reflective trim, etc. - a paper tiger if you ask me. While commuting (2006 Rivendell Quickbeam) in which I ride through parts of DC in the dark, I use 2 head lights (one on my helmet), two tail lights, I have reflectors on sides and back of my panniers, and I have reflective elements on my booties and gloves. I also wear a reflective work vest (http://www.amazon.com/Neiko-Visibility-Yellow-Reflective-Standard/dp/B0086X6T6M) for complete overkill. Does not matter if what I wear in addition is back and non reflective plus I have enjoyed wearing it off the bike and not looking like a total geek. As for club riding in day light (1986 Serotta CSI) - I concur with an earlier review - does not matter what color you are wearing - If not the case, better round up all dark color not reflective cycling kits. Finally, is is American made.

Responded on

Good to see a different opinion on this jacket. For the record, I did purchase the jacket but returned it while it was still in new condition. You seem to have had a similar experience as mine concerning the accuracy of the sizing chart.
Re: reflective elements. If you have to wear a safety jacket on top of the S&S S1-J, you are in fact agreeing that reflective elements do need to be present on a jacket no matter how many other lights/reflective elements you have on you or your bike.

Me: chest 38, waist 31. Size chart says M. e-mailed Search and State and they said M. Asked CC and they said M. Result? I can barely put the jacket on and it was a struggle to get it off.
The cut does look nice but I have to disagree with the other reviewers about the incredible fit. Maybe if I tried a L. But I won't because of a MAJOR fault of the jacket: it is black with absolutely ZERO reflective material. Hello? I thought that Search and State was based in Manhattan, don't they have cars on the road that need to see cyclists in a rainstorm?

Best Fitting Jacket Out There

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

If you value the intersection of form and function, then you need this jacket in your life. Schoeller C-Change keeps the water out, only without feeling stifling. In other words, the jacket is highly breathable. What truly sets it apart, though, is that it behaves almost like a sentient being. Schoeller draws a parallel between its C-Change and that of a fir cone. Where as the cone will naturally expand and contract in response to its surrounding temperature, C-Change's membrane will behave in much the same way. In theory, when temperature rises, the membrane expands to let core heat escape. And in the cold, the body of the membrane condenses to retain warmth. In practice, which is admittedly often divorced from theory, this technology is highly evident.

In terms of fit, Search and State's background comes into play?it's perfect. And while fit is admittedly subjective, I've yet to hear any complaints from anyone I know who also own the S1-J.

Quality materials and tailored fit.

This jacket is amazing. Schoeller's C-Change fabric has an amazing feel/finish and is completely waterproof.
No taped seems, but I've been in and out of downpours and have never had any water come in. The RiRi zippers are another awesome feature, which should be labeled 'built to last.' Bottom action zipper is also nice for venting and accessing the jersey pockets.
Lastly, The S1-J's winning move for me is the fit. Until owning the S1-J, Ive never had a jacket fit me properly. This jacket really has a click-in 'racer/slim' fit, no flap to be found.
Buy and be happy.
