Search and State S1-A Jersey $0.00
Two-tone is the only way to ride.
The S1-A Jersey's understated design approach isn't exclusive to Search and State. In fact, many are latching onto a minimal look, solely for aesthetic purposes. Not surprisingly, though, aesthetics were never the sole mission for SAS. Instead, its primary focus is on designing clothing that's engineered to function exactly as you need it to, with style simply serving to complement its no-gimmick approach. In fact, you aren't going to see any tremendous innovations with Search and State. However, what you will see are small runs of technical apparel that are produced in Manhattan's Garment District. And because of this, SAS is able to place the highest emphasis on design, fit, construction, and using the best fabrics and hardware available. Its S1 line is a testament to this, as the streamlined aesthetic not only looks clean and classic, but it also serves the higher purpose of functionality. With this precedent set, the S1-A jersey provides you with only what you need and nothing more.
You might think that you're missing something when first viewing the S1-A jersey, as the solid-color fabric paneling might seem like it was an afterthought. But, upon closer examination, you'll find that this design was entirely intentional. The fabric chosen to construct the S1-A is a two-tone microbial fabric that's milled in the USA. On the Black colorway, grey interior mates with the perforated outer-layer, showing through slightly in order to provide the rich two-tone finish. At a distance, it reads true to color, but up close, the textured look becomes apparent.
In terms of functionality, this fabric incorporates all of the lightweight, breathable, and moisture managing properties that you'd expect in a high-ticket jersey. However, the texture and appearance of the S1-A jersey combine in order to create a material unlike anything else that we've seen. This goes back to the design approach taken by the founders, who chose the fabric based exactly on what they'd personally want in a jersey. It's this freedom of decision that makes SAS' jersey a refreshing change from the zeitgeist.
Because the S1-A was designed with a single fabric and minimal panels, the resulting fit falls into what SAS calls a 'race-inspired slim fit.' And while many jerseys blend multiple fabrics of differing fiber weights and composition, this approach typically leads to an excess of uncomfortable seams. However, the S1-A's lone material equates to fewer seams for a smoother transition from one panel to the next. Furthering the fit characteristics of these uninterrupted panels, SAS built the jersey with a contoured design. Accordingly, each panel was cut to form to the cyclist's body while in motion, meaning that the jersey stays firmly in place throughout the various positions of cycling.
And while SAS uses an understated style with all of its apparel, this shouldn't be confused with skimping on the details. In fact, we feel the opposite to be true, as the 'less-is-more' mantra is indeed a sound principle when designing a technical jersey. Accordingly, SAS incorporated a Riri zipper at the front for its reliability. Furthermore, an elastic gripper was sewn into the waist and at the tops of the three rear pockets. Elastic treatments were omitted from the sleeve cuffs, allowing your arms a full range of motion and increased comfort.
The Search and State S1-A Jersey is available in four sizes from Small to X-Large and in the colors Black, Green, and Grey.

Not in agreement
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
I don't seem to be in agreement on this one.
The fabric felt kind of clammy, the cut is unrefined and flappy (unless you may be a sturdily square individual), and that heavier zipper is clunky and does not conform to a cycling position.
The only things I liked about it are its origin, and overall aesthetic.
If you are looking for a nice, US-made, plan grey-scale jersey, I would take a good look at the Twin Six Standard.
Will this jersey break in at all? I'm 6'4"...
Will this jersey break in at all? I'm 6'4" 215 lbs. The XL is really race fit on me. I'm not in race shape really, atleast at the moment. I'm considering giving it a shot but havnt decided.
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I've had jerseys from all the big brands, and the Search and State SA-1 is a quality piece.
It fits pretty well, though I wish it were slightly shorter in the front for me so it would avoid some bunching of fabric that I get. It's not that bad, just nitpicking.
