Schwalbe Hans Dampf Snakeskin TL Ready - 29in $89.95
Schwalbe has earned a reputation for producing lightweight, high-volume tires that bridge cross country speed with all-mountain reliability. However, riders who fell in love with the fast-rolling Rocket Ron or the tenacious Knobby Nic often wished for a more durable sidewall. Schwalbe answered that demand with its Jack-of-all-trades, Hans Dampf Snakeskin TL Ready 29in Tire.
With large tread blocks, a 2.35 inch width, and Snakeskin sidewall reinforcement the Hans Dampf 29er is placed squarely in the emerging 29er all mountain market. And with plenty of 5 inch-plus travel, full suspension 29ers coming with the Hans as their original tire, it's clear that this tire hits the nail on the head.
This tire features Schwalbe's tubeless-ready TL technology, meaning that it will require sealant in order to complete the tubeless picture. In our eyes, this is no big deal, as sealant has proven to not only provide an air tight seal, but it also helps prevent flats down the road. Adding another color to that flat-resistant picture is the aforementioned Snakeskin sidewall.
Snakeskin is a nylon-fabric protection layer that's laminated to the sidewall in order to prevent cuts and abrasion from rocks. And while the added material does add a touch of heft to the Hans' waistline, it's only marginal when considering the added piece of mind. The tire also uses Schwalbe's 67 TPI casing with a three-ply layer under the tread.
That aggressive tread pattern is composed of Schwalbe's TrailStar compound -- a rubber mixture that contains carbon filler. This gives the Dampf toughness without hindering any pliability. The result is a fast rolling, aggressive tire. For added cornering traction, Schwalbe also used a grippier, softer rubber for the side knobs.
The Schwalbe Hans Dampf Snakeskin TL Ready 29in Tire is available in a 29 x 2.35in width.

I got a Niner RIP 9 RDO with Mavic ST wheels. Mavic states that maximum tire size is 2.3. The Hans Dampf is 2.35. Would this tire fit my Niner / Mavics?
It won't only work, but it will pair with that bike like fine French wine with cheese.
Thanks a lot, Nate.
The best AM tire that Schwalbe makes...
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I have tried several of Schwalbe tires, and this is the only one I'm using from now on. It has more traction than the Nobby Nics, but lasts a LOT longer. Sidewall protection is excellent. They are on the heavy side at 850ish grams, but a relatively lightweight AM tire that is burly enough to handle rough terrain for "enduro" style riding. I put a new one on the rear recently, and they are really grabby, so if you like a tire that gives way in the rear, this isn't the tire for you. They are a perfect front tire though for almost any terrain.
