Santini Active Air Jacket $300.00
The new wave of ventilation.
Santini's always been at the forefront in terms of innovative apparel styling and functionality, and its designers have now taken these characteristics a step further with their new winter collection. The Active Air Jacket stands in at the top this line, as it embodies the signature fit and looks of Santini's technical jackets, but it also incorporates an all-new ventilation system that intuitively works with you as you ride.
Starting with the construction, the Active Air was made from a blend of Santini's flexible and lightly insulated polyester materials. These fabrics are lightweight and breathable, which effectively work to pull moisture away from your skin and the layers underneath, depositing it on the outer-surface for evaporation. The panels of the Active Air were strategically cut and joined in a way that mimics your body's motions in the saddle, ensuring that the jacket remains firmly in place as you ride.
Looking at the front of the Active Air, you'll notice that the individual panels have been joined in a fashion similar to Santini's other technical softshell riding jackets. When you look at the rear paneling, however, you'll notice the new ventilation design known as the Active Air Intake system. On the right and left sides of the rear panel — up near your lat/underarm zones — you'll find slits in the fabric reminiscent of a fish's gills. These are actually overlapping vents that have been designed to open and close in accordance to your riding position. According to Santini, the vents pull closed when you're hunched over in the drops, but they open up when you are sitting in more of an upright (think climbing) position.
Santini finished off the Active Air with a drop-tail hem and two rear cargo pockets. A full-length zipper was added to the front, and light elastic treatments were applied to the cuffs and hem.
The Santini Active Air Jacket is available in six sizes from Small to XXX-Large and in the colors Black and White.

Nice update of the classic soft-shell
This jacket reminds me of the Pearl Izumi elite soft-shell with a few important quality additions. Notably, the windstopper fabric, the innovative fish gill like vents under the arms that give it its name, and a much better zipper. Fit is typical Santini, an "XXL" is about equal to a Castelli "XL" or a PI "Large", although I think the arms and length of the body are slightly longer, relative to those two brands. Santini rated this 47-60 degrees, as I recall. Not for me, it would be more like 40-50, (tops) with a light transfer style base layer. I returned the item since I was actually looking for something between a jacket and a jersey and this definitely didn't fill the bill. If you are in need of a soft-shell jacket, and you like Santini styling and fit, I would strongly recommend this at the sale price. Not quite sure how it got that $300 list however. One star off for the list price crazy, and the misguided temperature range.
Fantastic & innovative
Application: Jacket for riding in dry, cold 38-60* weather (depending upon your baselayer selection).
All Santini clothing is designed and manufactured in Italy by Pietro Santini and family since 1965. The quality and design of this Santini jacket is really nice. The soft and amazingly effective Gore "Windstopper" fabric is used (there is a discrete label on the right side indicating this). Plus, three interesting folds of "active air" vents that run just behind the arms on the back horizontally, just like a shark's gills. Thoughtful design, good looking, quality cam-lock zipper, and the sewing here is flawless. Hand made in Italy.
One of the details I like most: the design of the cuffs. They fit -perfectly- into my Castelli winter gloves.
FIT: With this particular Santini garment, size-up +1 unless you are really slim. I'm 5'10" and 185lbs. The XL fit me best. Perfect in the shoulder and arms. Form fit.
