Ride what the champ rides.

Like the rest of the gravity obsessed world, the live feed from 2013 World Downhill Championships in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa had us on the edge of our seats. All eyes were on hometown hero Greg Minnaar, the odds-on favorite to win, but his victory was anything but certain. Down eight-tenths to second place finisher Mick Hannah, a heroic effort saw him make up more than a second, the critical margin, on the final split. In the process, Greg earned the right to wear the World Champion stripes for his third time. An accomplishment of this magnitude warrants a serious pat on the back, and we'd like to join Santa Cruz in congratulating Greg Minnaar on his third World Championships victory by introducing the Greg Minnaar World Championships edition V10 complete mountain bike.

By Greg’s own admission, "there was way too much pressure to really enjoy the World Championships." With his two previous wins on the track, and animated hometown fans, he undeniably had more expectation resting on his shoulders than any of his competitors. But with two previous World Championship titles to his name, the man knows a thing or two about handling race-day nerves. Even Hannah's seemingly insurmountable eight-tenths advantage coming into the last split wasn’t enough to keep Minnaar down.

From the comfort of our own homes, it looked impossible, yet Greg gained back nearly a second and a half to put himself in the hot seat. With two more racers to go, the stakes couldn't have been higher, but even the top two 2013 World Cup finishers couldn't match Minnaar's speed and consistency. When Atherton crossed the line, it was official. Greg Minnaar had won arguably the most important race of his career in front of his home-town crowd, and in the process, proved that he is one of the fiercest competitors that Downhill has ever seen.

It’s only fitting to celebrate Greg's historic win with a signature version of a bike that he's helped to develop into the modern, World Cup winning platform that it is. As you are no doubt aware, the latest version of the V10 sports a new carbon rear triangle, where the original opted for aluminum. This keeps unsprung weight -- supremely important for bump compliance and optimum shock absorption -- at a minimum. Santa Cruz developed it in conjunction with the carbon wizards at ENVE Composites. ENVE's mastery of the material enabled Santa Cruz to minimize weight, and optimize its ride quality. But the benefits aren’t just weight related—the carbon fiber rear triangle is more than strong enough to allow the most aggressive riders to get wild, all season long.

The fresh design uses the 157mm rear spacing standard with which many current hubs are compatible via adapters. This spacing also provides easier wheel removal and installation. It comes with rubber swingarm protectors that are designed specifically for this frame. The rear triangle incorporates carbon dropouts and disc mounts, so there's no bonding or weak spots. Basically, this enables the junctions to have continuous fibers that run around and through the joints, then out into the tubes.

Connecting the front and rear triangles is a redesigned carbon fiber upper link with co-molded aluminum hardware that provides substantial flex resistance. All of the oversized pivots use locking collets that ensure secure positioning without pinch bolts, which ordinarily cause stress risers on the carbon bores. The lower link is constructed from forged aluminum, and the grease ports have been repositioned in order to avoid damage. The ports flush out grime and feed fresh grease to the angular contact bearings. Ultimately, this provides a long and smooth operating life.

The front triangle itself has been the benefactor of a few upgrades, too. Like the rear triangle, it features continuous fiber technology. The result is a one-piece, homogeneous structure with excellent load distribution and strong impact absorption. Now, the stresses of normal, and even abnormal, riding are spread across a greater area of the frame. New to this V10 are integrated fork bumpers and cable guides that save weight and eliminate complexity.

The V10 Carbon has 8.5 or 10 inches of Virtual Pivot Point suspension, depending on your preferences or course conditions. VPP permits the upper and lower links to rotate in opposite directions in order to shape the arc of the migrating virtual pivot point. It geometrically balances rider weight and shifts chain pull and bump forces throughout the travel. The result is a bike that pedals without unwanted suspension compression, yet it reacts to the smallest of trail inputs.

When letting the V10 flow, you ride in a suspended pocket with plenty of positive and negative travel. This ensures that you have ample traction and control over bumps and through ruts and holes. Rear brake forces are also independent of suspension travel, so the VPP stays plush when braking late and hard into tight corners. With the FOX DHX offered on this V10, it weighs under eight pounds and sports all of the adjustments necessary to satisfy even the pickiest professional racer. The DHX provides rebound, low- and high-speed compression, and spring preload, along with bottom out progressive adjustments. The V10 Carbon also features an 83mm bottom bracket and ISCG 05 chain guide tabs.

This being a World Championship-edition bike, it's outfitted with a build kit that’s essentially identical to the bike that Greg was riding when he crossed the finish line at PMB. While you don't get the prototype FOX RAD rear shock, the rest of the build kit, down to the custom seven-speed cassette and custom extra-wide ENVE DH handlebars, is exactly what was found on Minnaar's winning ride. The fork is a factory tuned FOX 40, running on the proven FLOAT air spring, which mates perfectly to the DHX RC4 rear shock.

The full Shimano Saint build kit won't be much of a surprise, but the custom 7 speed cassette sets it apart. The Syndicate-proven wheelset, with Chris King hubs laced to carbon fiber ENVE DH rims, get into the action with RSA-themed decals. ENVE also took care of the seatpost and handlebar, with the latter being a custom 808mm wide Minnaar edition of the famed carbon fiber DH handlebar. It's held to the fork with a Bergtec direct mount stem, long the choice for some of the world's fastest racers. A custom WTB saddle matches the frame’s stunning graphics kit, and the package is finished off with a replica number plate, as well as a replica World Champ's jersey. There are only 25 of these completes in the world, and at the time of the press launch, two had already been spoken for. Needless to say, they’ll be going fast in every sense of the word.

The Santa Cruz Greg Minnaar World Championship Edition V10 Carbon complete mountain bike is available in four sizes from Small to X-Large and with a commemorative South African themed graphics kit.
