When it was first introduced, the 29er platform varied so greatly from the then-standard 26 that it was immediately pigeonholed as a hardtail, XC-only brute. Since then, it has leapt through a series of pigeonhole hoops that have tried to limit it — too ungainly, too heavy, unsuited for anything but very short travel — before Santa Cruz produced the Tallboy LT Carbon CC X01 XC Float 36 Complete Mountain Bike. We've both seen and experienced firsthand what 29ers are capable of, and the Tallboy LT (Long Travel) brings five-inches of enduro-ready Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) travel to that platform.
If VPP is the heart of the Tallboy LT, then Santa Cruz's industry-leading Carbon CC construction is the rest of its cardiovascular system. Both the front and rear triangles are constructed as a whole rather than bonded together from sub-assemblies. This allows Santa Cruz to continuously wrap the carbon fibers through and across joints, allowing for less material and lower weight while still hitting the Carbon CC benchmark for stiffness, durability, and weight that makes the estimable Carbon C build seem sluggish by comparison. The carbon is also compacted from the inside and out, which makes for virtually perfect tube walls, eliminating material imperfections and resin pooling that could compromise structural integrity over time.
The frame's geometry feels balanced yet decidedly aggressive, with a 69.5 degree head angle that combines with the larger wheels and longer-travel fork to inspire confidence at speed while remaining maneuverable when you need it. The roomy top tube enables the use of a short stem and wide bar for a modern cockpit setup, and the seat angle is fairly steep at 72.6 degrees for an aggressive climbing position that enables efficient power transfer. At 17.7 inches, the chainstays are long enough for climbing traction and confidence-inspiring stability, and the boosted 12x142mm rear axle ensures that no watts are lost in the wheelset ether.
The two frame pieces are joined with the latest version of the celebrated Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension. The VPP platform employs two aluminum counter-rotating links to balance smooth travel with a consistently solid pedaling platform. The upper link provides most of the rotation as the bike compresses into the sag point, yielding a vertical wheel path that you'll notice in the form of a firm feel during acceleration. As the bike compresses deeper into the suspension, the lower link activates, moving the axle path rearward. The rearward axle path enables the rear wheel to yield gracefully to impacts, so the ride is smooth, not jarring, and pedaling efficiency isn't compromised.
The build kit features FOX's Float CTD shock with the reworked 36 Float RC2 fork up front, so the Tallboy LT takes advantage of the improved operation of a dual chamber air spring that's only coming to the 34 Float in 2016. The drivetrain omits the front derailleur, opting for the bombproof shifting of a one-by SRAM X1/X01 blend. This build goes Japanese for the brakes with Shimano's redoubtable XT system and Ice-Tech rotors. The wheels mate WTB rims to DT Swiss hubs, combining the expertise of two leading manufacturers for one confident ride, regardless of the terrain. RockShox's Reverb Stealth dropper post rounds out the build by giving you customizable control over your cockpit.
