THE big-wheeled, long legged trail demon.

The Santa Cruz Tallboy LT Carbon X01 AM complete mountain bike takes the carbon fiber Tallboy LT chassis we know and love, and gives it a build kit that's hard to ignore. With Fox suspension, a Rockshox Reverb Stealth dropper post, and hand built wheels, you'll have all the confidence you need, no matter where you find yourself. SRAM's new X01 drivetrain features an ultra-wide range cassette and a 1x11 platform to do away with pesky front derailleurs, once and for all. We're not sure if it's the ultimate trail bike, or a secret weapon for enduro races everywhere, but either way, the LTc is a modern classic, and the X01 AM build only makes it better.

Santa Cruz's industry-leading carbon fiber construction is on display here. Both the front and rear triangles are constructed as a whole, rather than bonding them together from sub-assemblies. It does save weight, but the real benefit is making the Tallboy LT is as strong as possible. That's because the fibers are uninterrupted by seams, which happens with other construction methods. If you were to cut it in half, you'd find that the inside of the tubes have the same perfectly smooth finish as the outside. That's thanks to construction techniques that maximize the compaction of the layers. The benefit is that it's lighter, because any excess epoxy is squeezed from the frame prior to curing, and this ideal degree of compaction makes the frame as strong as possible. When combined with the oversized tapered headtube and 142x12mm through axle rear triangle, the LT Carbon is more than stiff enough for the hardest charging riders to get unabashedly wild.

At the heart of the LT handling is a highly refined VPP suspension. It's a suspension platform that's widely beloved for its blend of pedaling efficiency and trail-erasing smoothness. VPP employs two aluminum counter-rotating links to achieve this balance. If you're wondering how it works, the upper link provides most of the rotation as the bike compresses into the sag point. This yields a vertical wheel path, which you'll notice in the form of a firm feel during acceleration. As the bike compresses deeper into the suspension, the lower link activates, moving the axle path rearward. The rearward axle path enables the rear wheel to travel out of the way of impacts, so the ride is smooth, not jarring. And you'll find the same collet-style pivot hardware that has become standard for Santa Cruz's suspension bikes. That means that your pivots stay tight and are simple to service, even for home mechanics.

Construction is key, but the geometry of the LT is an integral part of its near-magical handling. The 69.5 degree head angle doesn’t look particularly slack on paper, but with the larger wheels and longer-travel fork, it inspires incredible confidence at speed, while remaining maneuverable when you need it. With the travel-adjustable TALAS fork, you have the option of dropping the fork and steepening the head angle by roughly a degree, which aids the climbing control. Roomy top tubes per size enable the use of a modern cockpit setup consisting of a shorter stem and wider handlebars. The seat angle is fairly steep at 72.6 degrees, for an aggressive climbing position that enables efficient power transfer. At 17.7 inches, the chainstays are long enough for incredible climbing traction and confidence inspiring stability, without being long enough to compromise the quickness of handling. The short of stature will notice that the smallest size that the LT comes in is a medium. That's due to the increased standover height associated with the longer-travel platform and larger wheels. While that will keep some riders off of the LT, we can't help but admire Santa Cruz's approach that they'd rather not build smaller 29'ers if they're not confident in the handling.

As the name implies, the X01 AM build features SRAM's 11-speed X01 groupset. By using a massive 10-42 cassette, you're able to get a gearing range that's similar to a traditional double chainring drivetrain, and you save the weight and complexity of a front shifter and derailleur. The concept has been proven at the highest levels of competition via SRAM's XX1 groupset, so the reliability and functionality leave nothing to be desired. Suspension duties are handled by FOX units front and back, in the form of a 34 TALAS fork, and a FLOAT CTD evolution rear shock. The fork employs FOX's FIT sealed damper for consistent performance on long descents, and the none-more-gold Kashima coating, in addition to travel adjust. The TALAS spring allows you to lower the fork to 110mm of travel for more responsive climbing, and lengthen it to the full 150mm of travel for descending. Speaking of which, Shimano's venerable XT brakes handle stopping duties. You'll find an Easton EC70 handlebar and Truvativ AKA stem handling the steering, and the staff favorite Rockshox Reverb Stealth dropper post puts control of your saddle height at your fingertips. Rounding out the build kit is a hand built wheelset comprised of DT's legendary 350 hubs laced with DT spokes to WTB i23 tubeless compatible rims. They're wrapped in Maxxis Ardent tires, which have developed a loyal following for their fast rolling and incredible grip across a broad range of trail conditions.
