Description

The big ticket.

When there's 135mm of VPP wheel travel riding on 29-inch rubber, you can expect a smooth ride. And to ensure shifting's equally up to par, the Santa Cruz Tallboy LT Carbon Featured Bike is spec'd with a full XT drivetrain.

Destined for more aggressive terrain and riding than the XC-oriented Tallboy, the LT Carbon is longer and taller than its sibling. But, to keep that in perspective, the Tallboy's short chainstays and ultra-compact head tube make it one of the most nimble full-suspension 29ers out there. The head tube angle is slackened a bit as well, to a more stable 69.5 degrees.

Santa Cruz's proprietary carbon processes is in full effect here, with a one-piece construction and added material at the head tube and bottom bracket junction. The carbon fibers are continuous around the tube junctions to increase distribution of loads while improving the absorbency of impact energy. It also provides a solid chassis for the VPP suspension, which uses patented, counter-rotating shock links.

When sag is set correctly, the Tallboy LT Carbon is extremely responsive to small- and medium-sized bumps. On larger hits that push it deeper into its travel, it becomes more stubborn — a necessity to avoid harsh bottom-out. It's also a crisp, efficient pedaler, even in the small chainring. Another big plus of VPP suspension is its durability. In fact, Santa Cruz guarantees the pivot bearings for life. The suspension is sprung by a light FOX FLOAT CTD with the simplified Climb, Trail, and Descent dampening settings.

Leading the Tallboy LT Carbon's charge is a RockShox Pike RCT3 Fork that rides on a Chris King headset and is steered by a Thomson X4 stem and carbon riser bar. Shimano XT makes up the drivetrain, with 38/26t double rings on the crankset, and a 10-speed 11-36t cassette turns a Mavic Crossmax ST wheel. Maxxis' 2.3-inch High Roller IIs connect the Tallboy to terra firma, and Shimano XT brakes keep speed in check. Finally, a Fi'zi:k Gobi XM saddle rides on top of a Reverb Stealth seatpost.

The Santa Cruz Tallboy LT Carbon Featured Mountain Bike is available in four sizes from Medium to XX-Large and in the colors Blue/white and Black/yellow.
