Relevant.

With a lineage almost as old as Santa Cruz itself, the Superlight R Complete Mountain Bike is one of the longest running XC platforms still on the market today. Of course, this Superlight isn't the same as its distant ancestor, the Tazmon (we know you remember lusting after it), as it's benefited from years of constant fiddling by the Santa Cruz engineers. Given its simple single-pivot suspension and unassuming alloy frame, the Superlight remains surprisingly relevant — even for racing.

While the Superlight's single-pivot suspension design is nothing new, the company has taken the platform and refined it to perfection over the years, resulting in a durable, reliable frame. Evidence of this in found in the pivot's location. It's placed slightly above and forward of the middle chainring, to offer the best balance of pedaling efficiency and bump compliance.

The frame's hydroformed alloy tubes are shaped into an asymmetric rear triangle, buttressing-up the drive side while keeping material to a minimum in areas that aren't key to power transfer. This focus on efficiency is a must considering the Superlight's 27.5in (sizes small and medium) and 29er (sizes large and x-large) wheel. While the larger wheels offer a more aggressive, terrain-gobbling angle of attack, they do require a stiffness chassis to take full advantage of them. The combination ensures suspension motion is directed to the rear shock, which would otherwise cause the frame to flex or shutter around switchbacks or across rock gardens.

The single-pivot suspension also gets a boost from FOX Racing Shox's FLOAT CTD Evolution rear shock, which has three distinct damping settings to quickly and easily adjust to suit the terrain on a given day's menu. If you’re going to sprint up a fire road, for example, the Climb setting will essentially lock out the rear shock — but remain compliant over water bars or sharp edge bumps. The Trail setting provides a more active motion to assist with traction when traversing punchy, root-laden hills or flowy sections of trail. And the Descend setting offers unrestricted motion for technical downhill sections that would otherwise bobble you about.
