Simply smart.

The single-pivot suspension design at the heart of Santa Cruz's Superlight Mountain Bike Frame may not have the bling of the company's Virtual Pivot Point models, but the design's gradual evolution over the years has made it one of the simplest, most reliable suspension models in the industry. The frame itself is likewise bereft of all the whiz-bang carbon advancements that SC has pioneered, but we're once again thinking in terms of reliability and the decades of on-trail proof that hydroformed alloy is more than equal to anything the trail can throw its way. The pivot's location is demonstrative of Santa Cruz's ongoing commitment to continually refining both the frame and the suspension. It's placed slightly above and forward of the middle chainring, to offer the best balance of pedaling efficiency and bump compliance.

The frame's hydroformed alloy tubes are shaped into an asymmetric rear triangle, buttressing-up the drive side while keeping material to a minimum in areas that aren't key to power transfer. This focus on efficiency is a must considering the Superlight's 27.5in (sizes small and medium) and 29er (sizes large and x-large) wheel. While the larger wheels offer a more aggressive, terrain-gobbling angle of attack, they do require a stiffer chassis to take full advantage of them.

The single-pivot suspension also gets a boost from FOX Racing Shox's FLOAT CTD Evolution rear shock, which has three distinct damping settings to quickly and easily adjust to suit the terrain on a given day's menu. If you’re going to sprint up a fire road, for example, the Climb setting will essentially lock out the rear shock — but remain compliant over water bars or sharp-edged bumps. The Trail setting provides a more active motion to assist with traction when traversing punchy, root-laden hills or flowy sections of trail. And the Descend setting offers unrestricted motion for technical downhill sections that would otherwise bobble you about.
