One bike for many courses.

Chances are you're familiar with Santa Cruz Bicycles' prestigious reputation for building fast, agile, and bombproof mountain bikes. What you may not know is that they've channeled that awesomeness and stuffed it into a cyclocross bike for all of us who love to play in the mud, grass, and gravel, but don't need the suspension. The 2016 Stigmata Carbon Rival 22 Complete Cyclocross Bike delivers all the quality you'd expect from Santa Cruz to fuel almost any ride adventure. It'll be right at home carving through a technical 'cross course, perching on your shoulder for a run up, tearing across gravel, or shepherding you through a snowy winter road ride.

The Carbon C features a full carbon fiber frame boasting the same stiffness, durability, and strength as Santa Cruz's top-line Carbon CC frame. It's made with a slightly less costly carbon fiber than the Carbon CC model, which results in a tiny bit more weight and a big reduction in overall price. The frame borrows some technology from SC's mountain bike world, including a 15mm thru-axle fork and 142mm rear axle spacing for a super stiff ride that's free from flex and the power-sucking disc rub that tags along with it.

The geometry on the Stigmata Carbon falls somewhere in between super aggressive, pure racing cyclocross bikes and more relaxed gravel grinders, resulting in a setup that's up for tackling almost any ride. Think of it as a neutral island in a sea of overly specific bicycles that can cross boundaries between mud, grass, gravel, and road to throw down and reign in a wide range of terrain.

Santa Cruz builds the frame up with SRAM's workhorse Rival 22 drivetrain and braking system, delivering trickle-down technology from the top-line Red group for quiet, precise shifting and consistent braking every time you clip in. A Zipp Service Course cockpit lets you stay in control, while a set of WTB Asym i19 rims laced to super-smooth DT Swiss 370 hubs wind up and roll fast on tubeless-ready Maxxis Mud Wrestler tires.

  • A 'cross and gravel bike that keeps going when the road ends
  • Geometry balances compact aggression and long stability
  • Santa Cruz's stiff, lightweight carbon makes no compromises
  • Thru-axles hold lines through mud and across washboard
  • Armed with a build kit as tough as gravel

Great bike and great value

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

First- CC is awesome to deal with and made a price correction for a sale after I received it w/o and hassle or problem. I will buy from them again because they treat you right and are FAST. Highly Rec. them as a dealer. Now- they bike. I really like the lower BB and light weight. I tested this and a Spec. Diverge and really the Diverge was what i wanted but the weired rear hub killed it for me. I'm VERY happy with this and think it will be better in the long run for me. It is a versatile bike. I do wish it had fender mounts! I know it is intended as a race bike but you never know and to have them is not a big extra to add at the factory. I ride it as my all-around bike and it has an awesome ride for me. I put 32 c gravel king tires on it-tubless. I plan for a second set of cross wheels. 56 cm size.

Great bike and great value

Three for One

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Cyslocross, sure it can handle that. Gravel grinding, yup, it can handle that too. Long summer road rides, no problem. The beauty of this bike is that it can do all these disciplines to the highest level and allows you to have one bike, not 3.
When you want to hit the gravel this machine will fit 41mm wide tires to allow for plenty for mudslinging and trench digging. However, when you want to put the Assos kit on and pretty up it will handle effortlessly with skinnies, I would recommend Gatorskins 28mm, but that’s me.
This bike and many others at this caliper are changing the game, 3K for a bicycle is a lot, but when you’re getting 3 for 1 it is not bad at all. As a fan for X1 I think there is a place for the 2X still, especially if you plan on using this as a multi-purpose machine. Please hit me up if you have any questions or need anything at all – happy to help out.

Hi Bill,
Will these bikes take fenders? I mostly need them for commute in the Pacific NW.

Stigmata 1yr review tested & true!

The first time I laid eyes on the Stigmata it was love at first sight! Before I ordered from Backcountry I really wanted to test ride this bike but I unfortunately had no Santa Cruz retailers in my area. My next best option was to ride every other cross bike brand in my area and compare the geometry and other specs to the Stigmata. After riding Specialized, Felt, Trek, Cannondale, Raleigh and Niner I was convinced that the Stigmata would be the best fit and it was! The ordering process was easy. My bike was packaged very neat with no way of getting damaged. Within 30 minutes I was riding! It's been a year since I ordered from Backcountry and I am still 100% satisfied with my purchase. I've competed in several cross and triathlon events and the build has held up to its promise! Thanks to the Team at Backcountry!

    best of the best road/gravel/cx

"If Ferrari made an off road vehicle, that's what it would be like to ride the Santa Cruz Stigmata"--One of the best, most versatile bikes we offer the Stigmata is becoming a legend in only a couple of years. I own this bike and I must say pulling the trigger on it was the best bike decision I've made in years. If you are looking for a single bike to do all things skinny tire style, the Stigmata is your rig. It rides well on the road, exudes courage in gravel and can handle any CX course you will encounter. Light, smooth and spunky would sum it up. To put things into perspective I have a Pinarello collecting dust in my basement because there is a new boss in the house! If you have the means I highly recommend picking one up!

We do have some closeouts coming in with very good pricing. Contact me for details. Ive got about 1500 miles on mine so very familiar with the ride quality over various terrains. If you need help configuring this bike or have general questions feel free to reach out to me direct. We can do some minor swapping of parts.

Do you have any idea what the differences on the 2017 Stigmata will be (besides color choices)?

Hey Randal - The 2017 Stigmata will remain unchanged from the 2016 besides some new frame colors. Santa Cruz is not altering the geometry or basic features of this bike for next year. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in ordering this bike as inventory is starting to get low.

Do you have the weight for this bike, ideally for the 56cm size?

Hey Adam, Santa Cruz's site lists this at 19.2lbs for the Stigmata Carbon Rival build. I'll see if I can find which size was weighed in exactly for that, but it'll be right in that ballpark. If you have any other questions about this bike or anything bike related, feel free to give a call to my direct line 801.204.4547 or shoot over an email and I'd be happy to help! Best, Connor

Last summer, you had some awesome sales on this bike... any chance you have some similar deals coming up soon? Thanks!

Hey Troy - This bike will probably not go on sale for some time considering it is the new 2016 model and we only have one in stock at the moment, a 56 cm. I sent you an email to discuss pricing. Hope to hear from you! - Kyle L. - Expert Gearhead - - 801-736-4337

Hi Troy....looks like we have some closeouts coming in at the end of this month but they are available for backorder now. Contact me direct for info on them
