Spreading the word.

As Santa Cruz points out, most frame manufacturers started their adventures into the realm of carbon with road machines. The thinking behind this makes sense: road frames see less abuse, have fewer moving parts, etc., so you can dial in construction methods and structural integrity without worrying about multiple pivot points or the development input of trees. Santa Cruz, though, proceeded backwards. The California-based manufacturer's carbon gospel was first drafted at the mountain top, then it descended with the advent of a downhill bike, and now it's revived the Stigmata as a Carbon Cyclocross Frameset, made for trawling the foothill paths' light singletrack and gravel roads and spreading the carbon word by bridging the divide between trail and road.

Despite its misleading name, the Stigmata is in no way a negative blemish on Santa Cruz's legacy as a mountain bike innovator. It may be suspension free and come dangerously close to the heresy of a road geometry, but it still has the 15 and 12x142 millimeter thru-axles you'd expect on the most venerated full-suspension machines being produced today.

Having noted these familiar dimensions, it's worth pointing out that the Stigmata's wheelbase is actually tighter than many of the other gravel/'cross machines being designed by manufacturers traditionally associated with mountain bikes, but it mimics them in chainstay length and head and seat tube angles. This puts it squarely between a traditional gravel grinder and the precisely controlled 'cross rockets featured in the World Cup. The Stigmata's middle-road geometry makes it something of a missionary in the industry, able to cleanly transition from light off-road duty to cyclocross to the road simply by changing tires.

The hydraulic brakes, which are finally seeing a much-anticipated rise in skinny tire applications, also recommend the Stigmata as a trans-cultural specimen. This formerly mountain-only tech lives in harmony with features pioneered on road machines, including internal routing for cables, carbon dropouts and disc mounts, and electronic drivetrain compatibility. The 27.2 millimeter seatpost provides vertical compliance to smooth out anything from mellow washboard to chipseal tarmac, and the tapered head tube makes for a stiff front end with sharp tracking.
