The ambassador.

For decades, the worlds of mountain and road bikes were intractably separated, with either discipline keeping a jealous guard on its technological sovereignty. Cyclocross has made some inroads into this divide, but Santa Cruz's enterprising Stigmata Carbon CC Force CX1 Complete Bike, newly revived for 2016, is the most complete ambassador between the two rival factions that we've seen to date.

The Stigmata brings together a geometry that triangulates between road, 'cross, and gravel with off-road elements like the 15 and 12x142 millimeter thru-axles you'd expect on the most venerated full-suspension XC machines being produced today. The wheelbase is actually tighter than many of the other gravel/'cross machines coming out of manufacturers traditionally associated with mountain bikes, but it mimics them in chainstay length and head and seat tube angles—which measure 16.7in, 72 degrees, and 73.5 degrees, respectively, for a 56cm frame. Coupled with an across-the-board bottom bracket drop of 69.1mm (2.72in), these measurements further confuse the Sigmata's loyalties by situating it somewhere in the divide between road and 'cross.

Regardless of how you describe it (a road-minded 'cross frame; a rigid XC frame with steep angles), the frame's middle-road geometry recommends the Stigmata as the industry diplomat, able to cleanly transition from light off-road duty to cyclocross to the road simply by changing tires or wheels or just changing shorts. It gives a bit more spring while mashing and the sharp angles make emergency maneuvers scalpel-precise—a quality that we find ourselves relying on often do to questionable decisions with regards to terrain choice. But it's not our fault. The more we ride it, the more the Stigmata discourages restraint.

The SRAM hydraulic disc brakes and one-by Force drivetrain also shade the 'cross styling of the Force kit with a bipartisan tinge, while a list of features originally associated with road machines — including internal routing for cables, carbon dropouts and disc mounts, and electronic drivetrain compatibility — pull the bike back toward the skinny-tire camp. Whatever your application, the 27.2 millimeter seatpost provides vertical compliance to smooth out anything from mellow washboard to chipseal tarmac, and the tapered head tube makes for a stiff front end for efficient climbing and sprinting with sharp tracking for control when off-road terrain acts up.

The frame's tire clearance hovers around 41mm in the back with slightly more space up front, though that depends on how the tire manufacturer measures diameter. If it's just on the casing, you could be in trouble if you try to push this too much, so we recommend sticking with that ceiling until you know what works.
