Death to squishy.

When a cross-country race is heating up and it's time to fire the afterburners, a squishy rear suspension can cost you. The solution is easy, though. First, kill the squish. Second, kill it on race day. Santa Cruz's Highball Carbon CC X01 Complete Mountain Bike indulges your murderous impulses by bringing the speed-happy hardtail model into the modern age with 27.5-inch wheels. This combination strikes the right balance of terrain navigation and a fast-rolling contact patch to keep you in the game so that, when the time comes to take advantage of that stiff rear triangle in a final push, you won't be bobbing up a climb minutes behind the leaders.

The frame's carbon layup is a single piece instead of a jigsaw puzzle of individually-cured carbon tubes. This allows Santa Cruz to wrap the fibers continuously around structurally important junctures like the head tube and bottom bracket, strengthening the frame, dissipating the force from impacts and pedaling load, and allowing for comparable strength with less material. Translated into trail talk, this means it hits the bricks when you stomp on the pedals, dampens high-speed chatter, and holds lines like a cat on carpet — all with a low-weight that makes any full-suspension bike look like a bloated downhill-only machine.

The Highball does somewhat address the lack of rear suspension with a diminished seatpost, down to 27.2 millimeters. While this doesn't quite equate to the square-edge hit capabilities of the Nomad or Bronson, it does help to eat up trail vibrations that tend to accumulate over the course of a long ride. Up front, the 27.5 model has a more moderate head tube angle than the Highball 29er. At just 69 degrees, it rides the divide between slack stability and razor-sharp handling, keeping you in control while helping to control the terrain. Unsurprisingly, it also has shorter chainstays than the 29er version, which maximizes the hardtail rear triangle's efficiency while mashing.

With the exception of a Race Face crank, the drivetrain comprises bits from SRAM's X1, X01, and XX1 lines for the optimal balance of weight, function, and price, while Shimano's meticulous expertise surfaces at the brakes in order to calm things down when the edge starts to get a little too ragged. Finally, the wheels also bear mentioning, bringing two familiar faces together with WTB rims laced to DT Swiss hubs.
