The Santa Cruz Chameleon R Complete Bike might be the most aptly named one we sell. Whether under a new rider or a seasoned pro, whether on buff, fast singletrack, gnarly, steep rock gardens, or out in the bike park, the Chameleon platform tackles virtually any terrain or riding discipline, blending into its surrounding with astonishing ease, and the R package brings it to life with a mix of smart, light, and tough parts.
Part of the Chameleon’s unique diversity of talents is that it's designed to work with forks that have as little as 100mm of travel or as much as 150mm. At the 100mm end, you have a steep seat angle and a lower bottom bracket height. The change in stance gives a forward-leaning, aggressive cross-country geometry. Put a 150mm fork in and the bike gets taller as its head tube slackens to a shallower angle, affording high-speed stability and steep-terrain confidence. Should you care to install a travel-adjustable fork, you'd have do-it-all hardtail on your hands. According to Santa Cruz, forks with 130mm of travel, like the RockShox Sektor Pike RC Solo Air found on this particular build, are ideal for a balance of capability.
Another distinguishing aspect of the Chameleon is its tubeset. The massive tubes in the rear triangle are made from 6066 aluminum and provide stiffness for great power transfer. The large diameters are stiffer and lend the added benefit of allowing for ultra-thin tubing walls that reduce weight. The heavily gusseted front end also means gobs of strength and stiffness for precise steering and handling. The Chameleon will encourage you to constantly expand your riding style and limits to include stunts and jumps without flinching — not something often thought of as possible on a XC-worthy frame.
The complete "R" package on this particular Santa Cruz reaches for the highest levels of performance of any stock version of the bike. A Shimano XT rear derailleur delivers sure-fire shifting and reliability, with the drivetrain rounded out by a mix of Shimano SLX parts with a SRAM X5 front derailleur. The wheels are anchored by SRAM hubs laced to do-anything 23mm-wide WTB tubeless-ready rims hugged by Maxxis High Roller II tires. Shimano Deore brakes provide reliable, consistent, controllable power with minimal maintenance, and the tough and light Race Face cockpit supports equally comfortable contact points: a WTB Volt Race saddle and Santa Cruz's own Palmdale lock-on grips.
The Santa Cruz Chameleon R Complete Bike comes two color schemes — Black/lime and Dark Blue/orange — and in four sizes, from Small to X-Large. The bike does not include pedals.
