The hammer of the gods.

The cycling industry may occasionally be prone to hyperbole, and we don't often like to fall into that trap, but the frameset at the heart of Santa Cruz's Bronson S Complete Mountain Bike has proven time and again to be capable of all-mountain hammer-dropping on par with Vulcan himself. Since this Bronson's frame is built from alloy, the much-lauded enduro geometry doesn't come with the carbon version's eye-watering, Olympian price tag, and the improvisational, blend of Shimano and SRAM components is on par with the ever-capable Odysseus. The brightest stars in the build kit's constellation may be RockShox's Neptune-worthy Pike fork and Herculean Reverb Stealth dropper — both of which hover near the top of our list for navigating the Scylla and Charybdis of steep rock gardens and big-hit log roll overs.

While most of the Bronson's glowing praise belongs to the high-price Carbon CC frame, the alloy version here showcases the latest and greatest of Santa Cruz's expertise in the manipulation of aluminum. The butted and hydroformed tube shapes are the result of countless test-riding hours and computer model simulation. They result in, among other things, excellent standover height and a tapered head tube for steering precision. On the whole, handling and lateral stiffness are superb, and virtually on par with the top-tier carbon build with a weight gain that, in our minds, is easily justifiable by the drop in price.

The alloy Bronson still features the same Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension platform that Santa Cruz specifically designed for 27.5in wheels. VPP employs two aluminum counter-rotating links to manage chainstay growth and travel in order to strike a balance between responsive pedaling and a bottomless-feeling ramp-up. The upper link provides most of the rotation in the bike's initial travel, yielding a vertical wheel path for firm feel during acceleration. As the bike compresses deeper into the suspension, the lower-link activates, moving the axle path rearward to accommodate big hits and lengthen the wheelbase for greater stability. You'll also find the same collet-style pivot hardware that's general throughout the Bronson genus, which all but guarantees the pivots stay tight and does guarantee that they're serviceable at home by all but the most unwilling home mechanics.
