A perfect five.

In a perfect world, we'd all have a hardtail, a mid-travel trail bike, and an enduro/DH shredder. But this isn't a perfect world, and bringing a race-ready machine for each discipline under one roof is prohibitively expensive for the self-sponsored cyclist. Santa Cruz's five-inch 5010 Carbon XT AM Float 34 Complete Mountain Bike is a nearly perfect solution to this conundrum, though, striking a cross-discipline balance in metrics ranging from wheel size to travel and geometry to the reliably fast Shimano XT drivetrain.

Regardless of the trail situation, the 5010's geometry and construction details recommend it for going fast. The 68-degree head tube keeps tracking stable enough for enduro-style ripping and the oversized 12x142mm rear axle stiffens things up to limit time on the climbs. The 27.5 wheels, also operating on the all-things-in-moderation creed, make for stubby chainstays that benefit from the steamroller effect of big wheels while still maintaining the responsive acceleration and sharp handling of 26ers. This best-of-all-worlds versatility is further boosted with a RockShox Reverb Stealth dropper post, so the 5010 can modify its ride to all manner of terrain variations.

The 5010's Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension platform is largely responsible for its adaptability because of the two counter-rotating links that govern its travel. The upper link provides most of the rotation as the bike compresses into the sag point for a vertical wheel path that manifests as a firm platform for acceleration and eager small-bump compliance. As the bike compresses deeper, the lower link activates, moving the axle path rearward to lengthen the wheelbase and increase stability.

Of course, no frame can transcend shoddy construction, so the 5010's desirable properties begin with Santa Cruz's peerless Carbon CC layup technology. Carbon CC frames use a higher modulus carbon fiber and proprietary layup process to achieve the same strength and stiffness characteristics of the heavier Carbon C frames but with much less weight — about 250-280 claimed grams per frame.

Both the front and rear triangles are constructed as a whole, rather than bonding them together from sub-assemblies. In addition to saving weight, this ensures that the 5010 is as strong as possible by allowing for continuously wrapped fibers through seams and around junctures for improved structural integrity that actually requires less material. The frame is also compacted to eliminate excess carbon and internal resin build-ups, making for yet more weight loss and further increasing structural integrity.

The component build forgoes the current one-by trend in favor of the added versatility of a Shimano XT double drivetrain. The XT is seasoned with a dash of SRAM with an XO front derailleur and S2200 crankset, which adds a touch of lightweight, carbon efficiency to the durable XT group. We've also taken the liberty of upgrading to the optional FOX 34 Float fork, so neither front derailleur issues nor unruly trail furniture will throw-off your ride. The wheels combine WTB rims with the unrivaled spinning of DT Swiss hubs so no watts are lost in the translation from drivetrain to trail. As with some of the more expensive 5010 builds, this model's kit is finished with Shimano's XT hydraulic disc brakes and Ice-Tech rotors for confident, reliable stopping power that won't leave you in the lurch when the edge gets a bit too ragged.
