While headlines across the industry have typically favored Santa Cruz's big-travel Goliaths, the sprightly, nimble 5010 Carbon CC XT Complete Mountain Bike's has quietly slayed the six-plus-inch giants in the hearts of XC race aficionados the world over. Though it doesn't have the trendy 67- or 65-degree head tube angle of bikes like the Bronson and Nomad, the 5010's steeper geometry is backed up by a lower bottom bracket height, which nets gains in stability while railing berms, more confident braking, and a sharper kick while climbing or sprinting. In the right hands, the 5010 plays the nimble David to the Bronson's and Nomad's Goliath, dancing circles around its lumbering stablemates.
Though it's tighter than on slack enduro sleds, the 5010's 68-degree head tube keeps tracking stable enough for all-mountain dust-ups, and the stubby chainstays and oversized 12x142mm rear axle stiffen the back end for more efficiency when the gradient rises. The mid-sized, 27.5in wheels continue the 5010's giant-slaying theme, benefiting from the high angle of attack of big wheels while still maintaining the responsive acceleration and flop-free steering of 26ers. This best-of-all-worlds versatility is further boosted with a RockShox Reverb Stealth dropper post, so the 5010 can modify its ride to all manner of terrain variations.
The 5010's Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension platform is largely responsible for its adaptability because of the two counter-rotating links that govern its travel. The upper link provides most of the rotation as the bike compresses into the sag point for a vertical wheel path that manifests as a firm platform for acceleration and eager small-bump compliance. As the bike compresses deeper, the lower link activates, moving the axle path rearward to lengthen the wheelbase and increase stability.
Of course, no amount of suspension genius can transcend shoddy construction, so the 5010's desirable properties begin with Santa Cruz's peerless Carbon CC layup technology. Barring the new paint job, this is the same frame as featured on the 2016 models. Carbon CC frames use a higher modulus carbon fiber and proprietary layup process to achieve the same strength and stiffness characteristics of the heavier Carbon C frames but with much less weight — about 250-280 claimed grams per frame.
Both the front and rear triangles are constructed as a whole, rather than bonding them together from sub-assemblies. In addition to saving weight, this ensures that the 5010 is as strong as possible by allowing for continuously wrapped fibers through seams and around junctures for improved structural integrity that actually requires less material. The frame is also compacted to eliminate excess carbon and internal resin build-ups, making for yet more weight loss and further increasing structural integrity.
The component build forgoes the current one-by trend in favor of the added versatility of a Shimano XT double drivetrain. The XT is seasoned with a dash of SRAM with an X0 front derailleur and S2200 crankset, which adds a touch of lightweight, carbon efficiency to the durable XT group. Suspension duties fall to a FOX Float shock and a RockShox Pike, which has itself made a name as a giant killer since its debut. The wheels combine WTB rims with the unrivaled spinning of DT Swiss hubs so no watts are lost in the translation from drivetrain to trail. As with some of the more expensive 5010 builds, this model's kit is finished with Shimano's XT hydraulic disc brakes and Ice-Tech rotors for confident, reliable stopping power that won't leave you in the lurch when the edge gets a bit too ragged.
