Item # SAL3134

Run faster over rockier ground.

Made for your morning run up mountain trails, the Salomon Men's XA Pro 3D Trail Running Shoe offers incredible durability, unbeatable traction, and cushioning so supple you'll have to look twice to believe you're on a scree field. An off-kilter asymmetrical Quicklace system takes the pressure off the top of your foot and lets you tighten the laces with a single tug. Quick drying and wickedly breathable, this husky trail shoe trounces trails and spits out unworthy bits of gravel as you get your mountain-goat on.

The mesh on top lets your foot breathe while providing a stalwart barrier against clods of hardened dirt. Sensifit and Endofit get a grasp on your foot and won't let go until you're loosening the laces with a beer within reach. Asymmetrical laces follow the natural contours of your paw and give your foot and ankle free range of motion. The 10mm drop protects heel strikers from brutish bits of boulder without forcing midfoot strikers to alter their gait. The 3D Advance Chassis system minimizes side-to-side rolling while smoothing the transition from footstrike to toe-off.

Even though the XA Pro keeps a low profile, the OrthoLite insert comes out and ample room remains if you choose to use a custom-molded insole. After one run, you'll become an EVA evangelical. Lightweight and soft, the EVA midsole mitigates your footstrike impact and offers a mere hint of stability. A protective toe cap lets you kick through piles of leaves without worry, and the Contagrip sole is downright greedy when it comes to grabbing the ground.

I bought these and the X ultra prime, wear an 11.5 but ordered size 12s for toe room on downhills. If your going to be in rocky scrabble the xa 3d chassis are good, if the terrain isn't as tough I prefer the X ultra prime, more flexible and lighter. However both shoes fit well are comfortable and work fine. Used in mountains on Appalachian trail several times.

Great Summer Hiking Shoe

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

As my first pair of true trail running shoes, I am thoroughly impressed with this shoe. I basically just got tired of hiking in blown out skate shoes, and decided something stiffer and more supportive would make my hikes a lot more enjoyable for both me and my spine 10 years into the future. I have had enough heavy hiking boots in my day and I have never loved any of them. The breathable mesh upper on this shoe is ideal for summer hikes. Sure its not water proof, but an hour in the sun and your shoes are dry to the bone. Stiff sole makes hiking over rough terrain a thing of ease and the support keeps you feeling good all day long. As I said, my first real trail running shoe, but I'm glad I took the leap!

Love and hate, but definitely 1 star

Good: Beautiful.
Bad: Fit is very snug, especially in hindfoot.

This is a tough one to write. I did a lot of research prior to buying these and they get top marks and seemed to be worth the cost. I was recommended to try Salomon as an alternative to Innov8 which I have liked in the past.

I live overseas at an FPO address and usually get things 2-3 weeks after they're shipped. I hike/walk a lot, and I was looking for a shoe with a moderately aggressive tread that was lightweight and fast-drying for extended multi-day trail use. These arrived after 3 wks. They are really nice looking shoes. The lacing design is really great and the construction seems pretty solid. I love em', right!

But they're torture to wear. I do not have a very unusually shaped foot. I wear size 13 but will buy a 14 if I'm going to do downhill running so my toes don't get blisters on the end (the reason I couldn't wear my last pair of Innov8s). This was one of the few pairs Salomon had in size 14. I have a moderately high arch and sometimes I will have tight fit in the midfoot with new shoes but never anything that some wearing in and loosening of laces won't fix. I don't have a wide foot, I've never bought anything but size D (medium) width and I've never sent a shoe back for being too narrow. However, these are VERY tight in the midfoot and hindfoot and cause a pain by putting unusual pressure on the tarsals and heelbox. They are very narrow and form fitting with an arch support that pressed uncomfortably even on my high arch. The result is that after 2 wks of trying to break them in, taking out the inserts, adjusting the laces, they hurt worse than ever. Fit in the toe box is fine. Even stranger, they hurt worse sitting and walking than running. Yes, they hurt so bad that I can't even keep them on during lunch out, I kept having to take them off.

If they fit I would give them 5 stars. They're beautiful, they lace really quickly and snug, they seem very durable (during a two week trial on road not trail they show very little signs of use). But now I'm 4.5 wks out, backcountry will not take returns greater than 30 days, and I'm out over $100 for a pair of shoes that I would rather wear anything (flip flops) before wearing these. Maybe I'll put them on a shelf.

Finally, as far as overall impression goes, these are bulkier and heavier than Innov8's Talon-X, my last pair. They look like they would hold up slightly better (more rigid insole) but dry slower and feel much heavier. I hope that helps your decision-making.

If you have anything other than a narrow hind/midfoot, buy these with caution and give them a good trial quickly and plan to send them back.

I concur with Will B. I've worn a 10 Regular my entire adult life (I'm just shy of 50) and I've never needed a wide size in my shoe, ever. I picked up a pair of these at the Fort Benning PX in 10 regular and they felt good so I bought them. After wearing them routinely I discovered that they rub the outside corners of my big toes and I haven't even tried running in them yet. I wish I would have known that they are on the narrow side when I purchased them!

Here is a side by side comparison of a 7 month old XA Pro 3D and a brand new one. You can see that there was some shrinkage which lead to pressure points on the outsides of my little toes.

I have a pair of the Speedcross 3s and the same thing happened, only I can barely even put them on now. I like the venting especially on hot summer days, so I went with the non GTX shoes.

    Came back for seconds

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I ignored reports that I needed to buy shoes a full size larger for long distance hiking but absolutely loved the weight and support of my first pair on a week hike on the AT. So, I came back minus one toenail (four straight days of rain and double socks and my feet didn't fit my normal shoe size) and bought a second pair a full size larger. I will keep the first for dayhikes .

This was my first experience with trailrunners for backpacking and I will never go back to heavy boots. I love that I can easily adjust the laces while hiking and traction was good on everything wet.

I do plan to upgrade the insole to Superfeet for added support before my next week hike.

    Rock Solid

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

The XA Pro 3d Trail running shoes fit a unique category, in that they're not a lightweight minimalist trail shoe nor are they along the lines super tough and rugged hiking boot. They fit somewhere in the middle as a shoe you can use for trail runs, hikes and everything in between. Solid grip for wet weather runs, sturdy enough for climbing around on some rocks, and light enough to find a rhythm while you run. Great one quiver shoe.

Good shoes, yet again from Salomon

Personally, Salomon shoes fit my feet best, so I pretty much always buy Salomon shoes. I've been using the pro-3D line for awhile, ever since Appalachian Trail attempt saw me put a thousand miles on a pair and only had to toss them due to the smell (can't fault Salomon for that). My only gripe with the new version is the tongue, which seems to try to wrap too far around the top of my feet, which makes me have to adjust the fit after sliding my feet in, and doesn't seem to add to the quality of the fit. Other than that, solid fit, good support, and another well made shoe.

This shoe is futuristic in just about everything. It moves very ergonomically with your foot, and the insole is better than any shoe I've had (I usually get aftermarket insoles, but not a great need in these). Light-weight, good grip and durable. I use it as my backpacking/approach shoe and am happy so far. I love the quick lace and tongue. Super happy with Solomon for making a great shoe.

The Salomon XA Pro 3D Trail is a must have for your hiking quiver. Very comfortable shoe, great stability, and after a 11 mile-2k ascending hike or trail run your feet feel like you just started. MUST HAVE.

    Used and Abused

I have had a pair of the XA Pro 3d Ultras for about 5 years now and have nothing but great things to say about them. I wore them for trail running for about the first year I owned them (which they performed perfectly for), then turned them into my hikers and approach shoes. I still wear my old beat up pair out and about and on shorter hikes and approaches. I find myself reaching for my beat up pair of these more than most of my other athletic shoes and the lacing system makes them super easy to cinch up or even wear them without the lacing system tightened at all for a comfortable loose fit.

    Could be better!

Well I wear them pretty much all day long. Seemed comfy at the first time. Walking and running is good. Later I noticed that during driving with these shoes on a car I feel little pain on one leg outside. I never ever that happened before on any of shoes. Size is mine for sure and other leg feels great. I would understand that that happens after longer walks or runs but not while I drive a car... Other than that they are great shoes.

Latest XA PRO 3D - Outstanding!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

This is my third pair of XA Pro 3D's. I work outdoors all day, every day. This has been my spring to fall shoe for the last four years and I can tell you that they do not disappoint! Fits perfectly to size. They are, however, a bit narrow. Something to keep in mind if you have a wide foot. I usually wear extra wide shoes and these, I usually have to break in (about 2 days) for them to stretch a little on the sides. This newest model also came with a redesigned tongue, which feels a lot more comfortable and is less bulky than the previous versions. All in all, great shoe. Comfortable and very versatile! I highly recommend it!

    Exclusively Salomon

The only shoes I'll wear are Salomons. I've been a big fan of the XA Pro 3D Ultra 2 GTX for years. When it was time to retire my old ones I decided to give these a try. They aren't as easy to slip on and off as the Ultras, but they offer more support and comfort. The tongue is housed in an elastic cover, keeping everything snug and tight.
