The SG stands for Soft Ground.

The Salomon Men's S-Lab Wings SG Trail Running Shoe turns hard, rocky terrain into soft ground for long-distant races. SensiFit straps wrap the foot for a stable performance, while EndoFit's snug internal sleeve enhances stability. A combination of protection and feel, the Profeel Film gives the S-Lab Wings a proven long-distance formula for light trail performance. Descent Control helps this shoe give you proper motion control for downhill running. Salomon fine-tuned the S-Lab Wings' Contagrip sole for wet, slippery surfaces, and added three layers of EVA for moderate to maximum cushioning. The Quicklace drawcord provides a snug fit that's faster to tie than you can run.

  • SensiFit and EndoFit upper technologies
  • Quicklace drawcord with lace pocket
  • Die cut EVA sockliner
  • Profeel Film and Descent Control
  • Compressed EVA and injected EVA midsole
  • Premium wet traction Contagrip sole

Shoe of the year, hands-down

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 47.0

I was initially hesitant on pulling the trigger to buy a pair of these, considering price and the fit issues I'd had with Salomon shoes in the past, but I've been amazed by how well they run on everything from rutted-out mountain bike trails to technical granite slab descents to dirt doubletrack. First thing I noticed was the fit -- unlike previous Salomons I'd owned and disliked, the Wing's have a tight heel that opens up into a nice medium-wide toebox, enough room to splay out later in a race/run, but not so much that the chassis feels sloppy. Combining the shoe's shape in and of itself with the Speedlace and Endofit design, the upper and midsole are a major win.

Traction is also marvelous, and plenty sticky for almost everything you'd want to do short of smearing up a 5.4 slab in an approach shoe. The lugs aren't the deepest out there (look at the Fellcross or the Inov-8 X-Talon if that's your game), but they don't get in the way on faster terrain, either.

Nitpicks: 1 big one. The factory insoles have a tendency to get bunched up in the front of the shoe on wet descents, so you'll want to glue those down before taking them out on longer, wetter runs. In general, I'm pretty unsure why Salomon decided to put a flimsy insole in the S-Lab line of shoes rather than a durable Ortholite midsole as in the Sense Pro.

Also, I'm unclear why these are marketed as "stability" of sorts. They're more or less neutral, it seems to me.

Durability and quality has been the clinching positive factor for me. With 250ish miles on these, and several runs in the 4-7hr range, I've had zero issues with blowout or major fraying -- probably some of the best durability I've ever seen in a trail shoe, apart from the Montrail Mtn Masochists.

Unanswered Question

My friend wants to buy s-lab wings SG. She is out of the country and can't try it before the purchase. Her size is 7.5-8. I know this show is unisex. What would be the size that fits her for this shoe? Is the shoe size for unisex shoes based on men's size?
And my second question is what would you recommend if she can't get s-lad wings SG
Thank you so much

Is it water resistant?

Hey Kyle,

They will repel a little bit of water, but there is no membrane in the shoe to really keep water out. These are meant to be a raceday shoe and most of the focus went into the sole compound and stability.
