Stay light, move fast, and run far.

A heavy shoe will do for a quick five miler, but when your training days consist of twenty-mile runs and race day is a mean fifty, rely on Salomon's S-Lab Sense 5 Ultra Trail Running Shoe to keep you light on your feet, supported, and well cushioned. The fifth and latest installment of the famous S-Lab Sense, the Sense 5 combines the same lightweight construction of the original with a bit more protection for ultra, mountain, and long-distance trail running.

The upper is composed of quick-drying mesh that's decked out with synthetic overlays to provide lightweight support and structure. Sensifit technology holds your foot securely in place without causing blisters or hotspots, while a minimalist Quick Lace closure provides an easy and secure way to tighten the Sense around your foot. A premium Contragrip sole supplies high traction on wet and dry trails alike, and the OS Tendon technology helps give the shoe excellent rebound and a natural heel to toe feel for easy striding on all kinds of mountain terrain.

Great protection in a minimal design

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Size Bought: 6.0

The Sense 5 Ultra is a great choice for rugged, technical trails. I do most of my running in more minimal, zero drop footwear like the Merrell Trail Glove, but find that on occasion more protection is necessary. I typically throw these on anytime I'm running with a pack heavier than about 10 pounds or if I know I'm going to encounter some rocky descents. The cushioning on these is fairly firm, which may take some getting used to for some, but adds to the great protection they offer for such a minimal shoe. If you're into sky or ultra racing, fastpacking, or even just some long days in the mountains these are definitely something to try out.

Fantastic Trail shoe!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

have been eyeing these shoes for quite some time but had always been scared off by the price tag. I love to get out in the mountains as often as possible but could never fully understand why a shoe could possibly cost so much. Well, after a few runs in the shoe I am kicking myself for not buying them sooner.

The Salomon Sense Ultra 5's offer a good minimal like feel but with plenty of protection when you are running on rougher trails. Their low weight makes them effortless while dancing up or down rocky sections of the trail. I find myself smiling every time I run down a technical section, like a kid at play.

The lacing system and fit are perfect where the heel and arch are nice and snug. The toebox is plenty wide to allow your toes to spread a bit without feeling sloppy. The rock plate in the forefoot adds a nice amount of protection without ruining the ground feel.

Overall, I am blown away by the quality and feel of these shoes. I tend to gravitate towards minimal shoes and these are the perfect combination of lightweight, snug fit, ground feel, and protection.

Thanks for the detailed review. What is your foot like? Wide, narrow, low volume, high volume?
