Tried out a couple of shorts, returning the others and def. keeping this one.
great lightweight shorts
I had the shorts for less than a month, and alternated this with a couple other pairs of shorts.
Anyway, I started noticing the stitching of the chamois shorts to break. I was kind of bummed since the padding was a lot thicker and was more comfortable.
Then while riding, I squatted down to decrease tire pressure and heard a ripping sound. There was a a 90 degree tear which came from the front zippers.
I contacted Royal Racing and they said that they changed the matrix shorts for 2012 and that the older model had stitching issues.
I sent it back and got a replacement under warranty, and after 3 months haven't had any problems.
Royal's customer service ROCKS!!
Love the shorts. Fabric is very lightweight, and it seems as if it'd be easy to rip but two crashes later and a few pokes from branches proves to me that material is strong. However, don't expect it to protect you much.
Shorts are super comfy. I hate the inner lining as it fits too tight, though I do like the fact they are meshed and breath well. I don't wear inners much, so it's no big deal.
4 stars over all. 5 stars had the inners fit well.
My new favorite shorts
These things are this shorts I've been looking for! I just spent a long weekend pedaling around NE Utah in the heat, dust, cactus, slick rock and mosquitoes and these things were killer! They breathe exceptionally well, the fit is a great compromise between full on DH and weight weenie shorts, they stretch and move very well, they weight is quite light and the included chamois liner is actually really good. The fabric held up to some gnarly crashes into some cactus and rocks - much better than I thought. The length is about perfect and the pockets are super deep so nothing will fall out. The openings will also fit over you knee pads.
The only issue I have found is that because the pockets are so deep, there's a lot of material that pulls out when retrieving gear out of your pockets. Tacking these to the inside of the short would help. But given how awesome these are, no worries.
Royal Racing Matrix Mountain Bike Short
Works well, comfortable, but warm compared to lycra only.
Sorry, but I can't agree with the other reviews. The liner on my pair ripped in multiple places on the first wear. The material on the shorts is extremely lightweight and does not appear to be durable. I would have to say that the durability and quality is lacking in these shorts. I exchanged them for a pair of Zoic Ethers that are great, the Royal Racing Matrix cannot compare.
These are great shorts, I bought these based on the other great reviews of these shorts and I agree totally. Super comfy and well made.
