Why We Like The Rocky Mountain Instinct Alloy 30 Shimano Mountain Bike

Whether we are looking for the one bike to replace all others or just the perfect bike for aggressive trail riding, the Rocky Mountain Instinct is one of our favorite bikes due to its ability to be perfectly suited to handle almost any trail we encounter. The Rocky Mountain Instinct sports 140mm of Smoothlink suspension for an efficient pedaling bike that rides high in its travel and feels fast in every scenario. Size-specific tunes give every rider an optimal ride feel by fine-tuning suspension kinematics for optimal small bump sensitivity, mid-stroke support, and bottom-out resistance to ensure trail-ready performance from day one. Rocky Mountain's Ride-9 adjustment system gives us a range of nine settings to customize our frame geometry and ride feel toward our preferences. The Instinct has a 65.1 - 66.2-degree head tube angle, so we can be more composed, confident, and stable in steeper terrain while maintaining snappy handling on flatter ground. The Instinct features a medium-length wheelbase and a steep 76.6-degree seat tube angle, giving us an efficient position, a stable platform for a balanced ride feel. The 2-position adjustable axle allows us to adjust our chainstay length independently of our frame geometry to give us a more stable or playful ride, and the integrated downtube and chainstay protectors keep our frame protected from the chain, rocks, and bottom-outs.

The Alloy 30 Shimano build of the Rocky Mountain Instinct is stocked with components that sport incredible value and are fit for any trail rider. First up is Rocky Mountain's Form alloy frame, which is made with premium materials for an impressive strength-to-weight ratio and gives us confidence sending it through the jump line. Next, Shimano's Deore 12-speed drivetrain sports a wide range and a reliable, value-based build. Deore 4-piston brakes keep us under control or steep descents, while the WTB ST Light i30 TCS 2.0 rims give us confidence plowing down chunky trails. The 150mm RockShox 35 Gold RL fork gives us trail-ready performance with rebound adjustments and a compression lockout lever, so we tune our fork to our riding style, and the RockShox Deluxe Select+ rear shock is lightweight and has a custom tune for optimal performance.

*Due to a high demand in the global supply chain and bike industry since the start of the pandemic, material weight and exact components are subject to change. Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
Small

I bought this bike in size small for my 5'2" wife. It's her first full suspension bike and she loves it. Buttery smooth over bumps. She gets more use out of the dropper post than I expected - she needs to drop it to get back on after stopping, then raises it up to get going. Shocks are easily adjustable, geometry is right for her size. One thing I'd probably point out is that the SM frame should probably have 27.5" wheels vs. the 29s it came with. Overall, though, it's exactly what we hoped it would be. Now the whole family hits the trails together.
